Slag chipping hammer

Hi everyone I'm seeking for advice about making a slag chipping hammer for stick Welding
I've already built one out of mild steel but it didn't hardened well .
I have always to sharpen it because it becomes dull very quickly
So happens to have some material here at home and I would like to have advice to choose the best material I could use
Two broken SDS Max chiesel bits that should be a particular tool steel that we call "acciaio per utensili da cementazione"
This material once tempered is very hard and wear resistant

I wouldn't like to use spring steel but I can get some from a friend

Construction,I am thinking to make a Tee out of mild steel(flat stock) an use one of the up-mentioned materials to make the cutting and pointed edges
Weld them together using 308L ,312L or 7018 also here I would like to receive advice about the electrode choice
I am also thinking about refacing the "head" using stainless steel rods (308 is cheaper) to add weight to it and also because I think that might be cool to see .
The handle I was initially thinking to make it just using a rubber hose glued onto the flat stock then some heat shrink tubing in it to be little bit nicer to see .
Thinking also to make an hole to hang the hammer somewhere or put a piece of cord ,cable or something like that if needed to prevent falls while working (not really working it's an hobby so is better say playing) on ladders, scaffoldings and things on those lines .
I want to make a drawing right now so you can understand better what I have in mind

I’d go all metal construction if I were you, if it’s going to be on your welding bench at some stage it’s going to meet red hot material. Used power chisel or jackhammer bits might be a good start and I don’t think you’re going to have any trouble with it being too light!

Aren't the handles usually oval shaped springs? It'd be red hot metal proof too.

Yep that's the idea , I've already made one but used wrong materials and completely messed up with the handle
Made the steel part between head and rubber too long , and left 10cm only for the rubber part
And it's not the best about comfort

The idea is copy the eastwing design ,I don't know if you ever seen chuckE2009 videos , I've always liked this design but I cannot afford the original one and them are not available here in Italy

I'm not a fan of the spring handle type chipping hammers, seem to bounce too much.

You may want to know one up with a point as well.

What would you like to advise to use as shock absorber onto the metal Shaft ?
I was thinking that rubber hose could be enough but I might try to foam mattress and heat shrink tubing on it

Thick aerated foam rubber with a sealed outer sheath.

Or a thick layer of dense foam, sealed with some nice cloth tape. Think 1970's handlebar tape.

I use a small chisel to chip slag, just tap it then scrape usually does the job. You could weld a handle to the side of a chisel to make it into a chipping hammer I don't think I use one enough to get worried about shock from the handle material.

I usually use to use it to scratch on a side and the slag come off but sometimes it's needed to hit the slag because doesn't come off

Ok so this evening I will go to take the flat stock from a friend of mine who has some 30x10mm
Another friend of mine suggest to avoid using a lot of stainless steel rods so I will use 7018 to weld the parts together and 6013 to surfacing the parts I want to be thicker
We will see how goes

I don't see the need for a heavy chipping hammer. If you have to batter the weld to death to release the slag, you're doing it wrong.

We just have the spring handle types, and while I hate the handle design, the head design works really well as a pick/rake, which is how you're supposed to use a slag hammer.

But off advice.
Make it however way you are comfortable with. Make it to suit you

I have a hammer made for a friend. 2lb lump hammer on a wooden handle.
I think is a pig to use. I find it in balanced, the shaft to thin.
But my friend loves to use it over mine.

He finds my uncomfortable to use.

So. Make it how you want. If it doesn't work, chalk it up and try again.

I don't need it only to remove welding slag ,I use it to remove spatters , and I will use it to remove plasma dross and Gouging slags
Also to break tacs
