I have a hammer made for a friend. 2lb lump hammer on a wooden handle.
I think is a pig to use. I find it in balanced, the shaft to thin.
But my friend loves to use it over mine.

He finds my uncomfortable to use.

So. Make it how you want. If it doesn't work, chalk it up and try again.

I don't see the need for a heavy chipping hammer. If you have to batter the weld to death to release the slag, you're doing it wrong.

We just have the spring handle types, and while I hate the handle design, the head design works really well as a pick/rake, which is how you're supposed to use a slag hammer.

Way way back in college days we used to make them from ordinary mild steel - ⅝” square for the head and ⅜” round for the handle, with a bit of drilled out broomstick to make it easy to hold. A bit of machining to form a point and a chisel end, and a bit of brazing to fit the head to the shaft. I want to make something good looking and little bit multi-purpose ,as I said earlier I plan to use it not only to remove welding slag but also to remove dross from plasma/oxy-fuel cutting ,slag from plasma and carbon arc Gouging,break tacs , help with fit-up .

I'm not a fan of the spring handle type chipping hammers, seem to bounce too much.

On the very best stick welds I've done slag removes itself, popped off as it cools. Only two or three times this has happened in all honesty.

Probably less than 5% of stuff i done I've had peelers, quick flick with tip of another electrode it just falls away.

About 90% of the time a rake along the edge of the slag and a couple of light taps is sufficient to remove all the slag. Might come away in very small pieces, but no effort required really.

Rest of the time if pneumatic tools or explosives are not available I still just use a spring handled chipping hammer.

However i do so while riding a slightly over inflated space hopper.

It helps if I've not had too large a meal beforehand as the extra weight can limit the bounce one achieves with the space hopper. On a good day i can bear down on the slag from a good three or four foot of height. It doesn't stand a chance when you drop from that height.

BTW I believe the spring handle was patented to reduce fatigue encountered by folk with little welding skill who produce diamond hard slag. I maybe wrong tho....

I've actually started to make it
Draw on the steel now I will start cutting and forming
I have to resurface two parts on the handle both sides 4mm to make them 8mm thicker
Prior that I have to weld the head on

Made progress yesterday,made the handle and the head ,welded the bits on ,and started surfacing
I gave up at half past 9 post meridian
Today after work, I will running other beads on the head .
I've used 2.5mm 7018 for the entire construction , and 3.2mm 6013 to increase the thickness of the head and two little spots on the handle .
Today after welding I will start grinding to give a shape to the handle and the head

This morning didn't go to work because waiting materials and permissions so why not proceed with the hammer?
I've finished welding on it ,laid enough material to grind it and give it a decent looking shape
This evening I will grind it to a shape ,cut the exceeding material make the hole bigger smooth it up
When all this stuff is done I will take it to a friend of mine who has a propane forge to temper the hammer
After that I will make a soft handle and paint it in blue
I've used in total something like 20 electrodes to weld and laid down enough material for what I have in mind
Hopefully I will not commit mistakes so the welder shouldn't need anymore on this project

Later I will upload a picture with the measurements and the parts just for showing the construction
Essentially is a Tee with a slot where chiesel point is welded on
It's made to have the inside core in tool steel so if required can be sharpened again without losing the tip
All the parts are chamfered both sides with 1mm landing an roughly 30° angle (60° V grove angle)
The base material is 30x10mm flat stock
The handle has reduced width from 30 to 22mm on the parts that must be chamfered for aesthetic purpose and on the part that will be covered with rubber or other soft material for comfort purpose
The head will become little bit smaller because it's probably to tall .
It's like bit more complex to explain than make it

I don't know why you all think to have something to be sorry ,here in Italy we tell a lot of bad and very offensive(I mean very heavily offensive) words to our friends just for joke

I find a wider head is better for removal of plasma dross. I use a brick bolster with 100mm ish wide blade. Ram the dross off holding at correct angle and it comes off easy.
The one you are making looks similar to the one I bought. It must be good as I caught a subby trying to make off with it last time I used them

Exactly that
I like this design and shape but here in Italy they cost almost as much as my welder (delivery+taxes+etc etc )
I have to grind a lot to me mine similar to this one

think it was arond £35 over here. Blimey how much do they add on over there ? Sounds like I need to do a roadtrip with a van load of chipping hammers

Think mine was about £4 at either Screwfix or Toolstation. Not sure which, definitely under £5
