Those pics are appreciated and are of interest to me. It looks like I have all of the bits except the motor. My machine is L4 which I take to be mid to late 50's according to Tony Griffiths site. I need to know the motor spec so I can keep an eye open for a replacement though I am wondering should I instead fit a new motor with speed control. The lathe had not been used in decades but was stored dry. Unfortunately, it is coated with very fine limestone dust which has formed a concretion in and around all the moving bits of the tailstock and the cross slide. They are soaking in diesel at the moment. Overall It shows promise and some potential!!

Eek. Recon mine had been dropped when the apron was off. Was lucky to find another one. Mine was worse and did manage to straighten it up a bit. You might be lucky.

Had a look on my motor the other day. Can't find the plate. Due to the way the motor is mounted it's hidden. Was a mare to refit. Camera won't pick it up either.

The Model M was fitted with a Thomson Houston 3/4 hp 960 rpm so I'm assuming the same motor was probably specified for the Model L.

HELP! Hi eLuSiVeMiTe. I've been stripping the S&M model L but not sure how to take apart the headstock. The shaft was seized but I have a little movement now. The big ring nut on the left came off easy but the one on the right will only move a fraction in either direction. Any ideas? Am I missing something?

Can't honestly remember.
The pulley is floating on mine and runs on its own internal bearings yours might be different.

Wait one il pop out to the garage

Screws were just securing keys iirc. Once the cnuts were off/undone (internals) it slid out easily.

First 3 picture. That plate is secured to the lhs of headstock and runs on its own bearings detached from the spindle
Spindle is driven by the keys.

Aye. Bearings rear and inside the pulley and bushings at the front. Yours Looks more like my M Withoutt backgear. Check for fixings securing the pulley just in case.

Took a while but the headstock is now in pieces. Unfortunately, the two big pulley bearings are quite rough and must have been poorly lubricated during it's working life. everything else seems solid. I have a local engineering supplies company trying to locate bearings but if they fail I'll try Bracehand. Thanks again for the photos. K.

Did you manage to get the pulley apart?
I never worked out how to get it open and as it ran smooth I left it be.

I kept working at the big ring nut on the right and once that unscrewed, the shaft with the bearings came out. I'm a bit p----d off with the condition of the bearings and even more so with the price I've just been quoted to replace. I think I'm a bit unlucky with this one and might have to consider refitting the old bearings and hoping for the best! You were lucky that yours ran smooth. I sort of knew when the shaft came out and I saw sticky residue instead of oil on the bearings that they might be cooked. When I freed them with WD40 they felt dog rough. Not my day!!

Just for anyone following this here's the headstock stripped with the 2 offending bearings in my hand. I can fully see now why Tony Griffiths remarked on bulletproof capability provided there is adequate lubrication of the bearings. These bearings do not run in oil but are wick/wiper fed via manual oiling points in the housing and in the pulley. Poor lubrication = expensive lesson. QED.
