Cheers, I’ve been collecting an old set of Marples chisels, the ones with blue handles. I’ve got all the sizes now. I want to make some aluminium handles. I just like making new chisel handles.

I’ve got a couple with Titanium handles I made a few years back

There must be a name for this affliction

That would do nicely with my titanium hammer

Depends on application but a safe chisel is a sharp chisel.

Put my hand in sliced my wrist whilst standing on a bright white carpet the impatient bugger was more annoyed by my slow response to handing him the mallet.

What are finishing files? Never heard of them before

In the same way that you get grades of sandpaper you get different grades of file. Your average file is usually a 2nd cut. Once you get to no4 it's like a bit of 800grit sandpaper

Make one.

I suggest you make a traditional shaped one first. To work out what weight of head, length of the handle you like.

Easy t make.

Head 3 bots of wood cut, doweled and glued.



This head is designed by me to be a mallet for knocking off tool handles. Hence why it doesn't look like a "Wedged" head traditional mallet. The wood here is German Beech, well that's were is came from.



Turned shaft, Hickory. Handle is Oak. To give flex and counter balance.
A good tool to remove wooden handles.


Below are 3 more wedged head mallets I made, all made to do one job.



Top.
Mallet for working on tradition Wood planes, To drive out and set the wooden wedge to hold the blade.
Thinner than normal shaft, means you have to use less, but controlled force.

Middle.
Heavy Teak, used for wood working chisels, on hard wood. Controlled heavy blows.

Bottom.
General purpose, beat any tool.

A few tips, if you choose to make a tradition shaped mallet.

Enjoy.

Then soaked in Linseed oil. Adds weight and helps protects the end grain.

I went with the early caveman style when I made mine. My wife claimed it and uses it in the garden staking plants and any other jobs where something needs hitting. It's just a piece of birch with a handle whittled.
