Spraying Questions - Semi New

no no laquer and i havent used cellulose for years and years 2 pack all the way.
when you apply cellulose it often blooms which are cloudy patches in the paint and once again you would polish to remove blooming and overspray

How would I spray this Black on then?

Simple, Sand down paintwork for a good key.. Spray the black on.. and then what? wait for it to dry and polish it? How durable would it be?

Also, sorry to be a pain in the ass, but do you have a website link of the product so I know exactly what to get?

How durable would it be?

as durable as the laquer would be its the same stuff without the black pigment.

if you want jet black ie as black as you can get it
just ask for exampe. a litre of straight black in 2k with activator and thinner
and apply as yau said above simples

That sounds really good! Why is it different from how others do it though? i.e. Spraying Pink, then lacquering? Why wouldn't/couldn't they do the same? or can they?

they can do it the same, its down to manufacturers choice fiat use a base coat and laquer for the white puntos even the new grandes which i used to do some blends on a 57 plate.
where as ford still use the other system for diamond white.

Right, so.. Simple steps for a simple person lol.

#1 Buy Straight Black 2pack /w Activator and thinners
#2 Flat / sand current paint to get through the lacquer and have a nice key to paint onto.
#3 Spray the 2pack mix straight onto the bodywork
#4 Wait to dry
#5 Polish with G3 ?
#6 Done ?

you dont need to get through the laquer you only need to take the shine off

How would I paint with this? thin coats? or aim for 'watery' but not runny coats? and how many coats would you aim to achieve? thanks!

mix the paint as directed and apply thinish coats wet looking but not too heavey and wait 2 or three mins between coats check by touching the masking to see if it has become tacky and apply 2 or 3 coats

Called a company this morning, they said what I was describing was 2k acrylic. Is this correct?

He also mentioned urethanes somewhere in the sentence...

Response was: Hello, Thank you for your email, 2k acrylic is a very high gloss paint if applied correctly, no lacquer is require.


So.. would this paint be okay to use? is it durable and all that good stuff? and have a decent shine? oh... and is it safe to spray over my current paint? Cheers.

Paint itself should be fine. Have a read around the safety side of things first - some links on here. http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/paint-safety.htm

I prefer not to use lacquer on solid colours - allows much more scope for polishing out defects.

So the paint above should be fine to lay down and buff up to a shine and voila, done? (obviously not as easy as voila... lol ).

How would you say the durability would be of it?

I have to admit.. I'm finding all this paint technology confusing.. Acrylic Enemel, Acrylic urethane, polyurethane... arghh

Hell this sounds kind of worrying, If I were you Callist, I'd get a pro to do it. Not being funny here, but I assume you've got a good place to paint this car??? Basically, have you got filtered extraction and are YOU wearing an air fed mask connected to a compressor OUTSIDE the spraying area???? By the sounds of it, you're gonna be spraying every weekend, you gotta be careful buddy, you can seriously screw your health up and others in the vicinity.

Please put my mind at ease and tell me you're well kitted out??!!

Ventilated area, air fed. Dont worry .

I have the memory of a fish. I used to spray with 2 pack base/clear and was fine.. Just I wasn't happy with the finish last time.. (Preparation problems).

This time I want to learn a easier and more suited way for my needs So hence all the questions. I also want to make sure I get the prep done spot on, so I'm going a little OCD with questions .

I dont spray regularly anyway, last time I sprayed was over a Year ago. Once in a blue moon thing.

"Ventilated Area"??? what's that Outside under a carport???? because it's not just you who you have to consider, isocyanates float very nicely, and anyone in the locale could get a lung full of this stuff. You should really use forced extraction with filtration in a homemade booth if you can. with the extraction being taken away high up.

As for your questions, as they say "if you don't ask you don't get"!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, just be careful mate and I hope the job works out.

I wont be doing it near my area (not that its the area that counts) but I will be doing it at a friends who has a proper spray booth (he bought it off the internet) kind of assembly.. with extractors etc. He doesn't know much about spraying so I couldnt ask him... just his dad.. but he isnt around..

As for the questions, I was wondering another thing..

When I come to compounding my car how should I go about it? I dont have a buffer machine.. but I do have a orbital sander whith adjustable speed which takes velcro pads. I have seen some velcro buffing pads - are these any good? (Is there any specific ones I should go for, for finishing paint?). I am going to buy some Farecla G3.
