Started the log splitter build

im surprised that you dont make a large enough shed for 2 icb tanks full of logs that can be lifted using your jcb even a 3 height icb tanks would be ample enough with enough lift height above to get them

The shed takes enough volume that it could store 36IBC tanks but that's then adding about £1k of cost to get the frames.

Yeah everyone says they can get you old IBCs for a fiver or for free down here but after 3 years of pestering them you give up. Realistically the only way you can actually get hold of IBCs is by going to one of the store holders who buy them in bulk and then you're talking £30-40 an IBC. Then the Scot in me baulks at paying that and throwing away the plastic tank bit.

The system we have now works the best for our setup, it's just a bit of a pain where the door is located.

Great idea mate I have a few tyres 14 inch and 16 inch

Can't claim credit for it, the Portuguese vet who is staying in our flat suggested it. Admittedly I'm at the younger end of this forum's membership but I reckon I'll get through rounds faster with a sharp axe than most would with a typical sized log splitter. But then our wood does split comparatively easily being oak, sycamore and Ash predominantly. The only one that puts up a wee bit of a fight is the large doug fir I lost to the storms earlier in the year.

We had a great system for logs when we first moved here.

I rang log lady. She delivered and stacked in the shed. Mrs put them in the basket for the fire.

Now log lady retired, then I retired, so now its my job. I split next to the shed, and stack as I go. At some point you need to handball them, no matter what you do.

Bottom line is you need a decent clear working space, dry storage area, sensible splitter set at a comfy to use working height and an arb mate that can keep you supplied with chogs. The rest is easy

I can just about move a bulk bag of logs with the front loader on the Kubota B8200 , I estimate it can lift about 300 kg , have to leave the 200 kg flail mower on the back and 90 kg of me . Still a little scary going up the 30 degree off camber track to my little field .
I keep meaning to cast a concrete a 300 kg or so counterweight .......
Just ordered in 8 bulk bags kiln dried ash from the sawmill locally £55 a bag ( up £5 from the spring price ) That's a good price for around here usually £80 ish for dried outside for 4 months rubbish mixed hardwood !
I'm. Hoping I'll have enough to last the winter with about the 5 bags worth I've already stored.

Buying logs used to be a mugs game. Notice the past tense.
Gas was much cheaper. At the moment it's worth doing.
When the gas price collapses and oil comes down which it will you would be better off with central heating!

Reading all this i might build one myself...Finding bits cheap enough is getting harder these days, everyone has access to mobile internet and when you go mooching for bits (pump,ram,etc) and ask how much,they jump right on there phones and see the trend..its killing finding mugs with good gear who can be hoodwinked

You could make an attachment for the bike engined kart??

Nothing wrong with any of that for burning, not so good for the neat fashionable log store!

theres no harm in having a dual system gas for the morning and wood for the day and evening

but a sealed system cant have that option

It can…but its complicated requires a heat store tank, pumps and heat exchangers!

better off with diverter valve hot water cylinder a pump an overhead tank dont need heat exchangers as thats within the hot water cylinder

To run a back boiler logburner / fire with a closed central heating system you need a fool proof way to stop over presurisation, hence why back boiler systems are open. The pumps and heat exchanger take heat from the back boiler open system and add it to the closed heating circuit Via the heat store tank. When I put it in I researched many many options but after consultation with the engineers at Stanley fires there was no really sensible safe alternatives.

But a diverter valve isn't a fail safe way to avoid over pressure! And a normal heating PRV wouldn’t have a large enough Cv to allow depressurisation should it fail.

go through what ive said the diverter valve is before the cylinder tank and is only used to keep the heat away from the tank from the gas boiler so it dosnt heat up the tank

if it fails all it will do is heat up the hot water cylinder

that system is sealed

the boilers prv valve wouldnt be bothered as the heat from the cylinders heat exchanger wouldnt heat the water as high as normal output would do

only a 24hrs a day wood stove burning would that heat get anywhere near where the prv valve would need to blow off some pressure

the wood stove would need an hr to warm all of that tank water before it got to the heat exchanger and then the 3hrs to get it to rad over heated
