Steel price increase.

Its all a bit strange, a job I quoted on before all this madness has landed and the question of price increases was mentioned. A quick phone call to suppliers and was told RM concrete was up £4 a ton, steel reo 10%. Didn't think that was unreasonable considering all the hype, asked if there were any surprises due between now and the end of the month and was assured there were none

We're finding it's affecting some materials/suppliers more than others. I suppose it will make a big difference where the materials are sourced from and who else needs/uses them. For example shutter ply and OSB has shot up and can be hard to get, but A/B grade facing ply has a marginal increase and there's no shortage.

Well, the steel price hit me, not nearly as bad as many other people as I am small fry but I do buy brass and bits of copper, phos bronze too. Bloody Nora!
Speaking to the owner of the local non-ferrous yard he reckons £10 a kilo for bright copper before long. God knows what that will translate into for raw materials. I was able to stock up a little last year but that won't last forever.

On the flip side, it will come crashing down at some point though I cannot see the merchants lowering their prices overnight when that happens.

I was told today that blue circle cement have shut their order books today. No cement in Orkney till 16th June and that’s all pre sold

Same issues with cold rolled purlins - I’ve seen a project near here where the primary steels have been up for 8 weeks and not a stick of cold rolled on there... wonder who ‘forgot’ to order that in time?

Equally, and in their defence, one of the main suppliers in this sector is currently indicating 20 week lead time for purlins etc!

One of my clients has an 18 week wait for cold rolled at the moment , and his cladding isn’t much quicker. Even things like box gutters have long lead times

Cement is in short supply here too, my local Builders Merchant is currently selling stuff imported from Ireland (as in ROI)

I heard a good story last week...
Local Travis Perkins received an order of cement, got it offloaded, and then the supplier rang up... "the QC on that batch of cement is dodgy, we can't take the risk of supplying it, you'll have to send it all back"
Well... what could they do? They had to send it back...

What a good excuse to get a shipment back and sell it for a higher price elsewhere
