Yup...seems we have both supply push and demand pull inflation going on.
Limited supplies push up prices...and at the same time the world is awash with newly created money so there is demand pull from the extra money supply for the limited supply available.
At the moment the "system" seems to be holding together far better than I would have thought....but for how long who knows. Hopefully it's just a temporary blip of inflation while the supply chain sorts itself out fingers crossed.
Problem with inflation is hoarding starts...why sell today what you can sell tomorrow for more money!

I don't know anybody who has gone skint yet.
Few of my mates in the motortrade have started to moan a bit more of late.
I too am suprised it all has held together so well. The economy must be stronger less and fragile than I thougth it was...
The long term borrowing some companies have done - may kill them off at a slow attrition - but as long as you don't get a crash - companies come and go all the while.

I phoned barretts Thursday wanting a quote for a few tons of 3mm, the chap on the phone said the bigger companies are taking artic loads at a time stocking up. Hardly surprising there is a shortage.
Just out of interest has anyone been to c roberts at Rotherham? I was waiting in there loading bay an hour and a half the last time I went.

When the hoarding starts I think we're on a slippery slope...people with real physical assets start to hold onto them because they'll be worth a lot more in a week/month/year...people with paper assets realise they're going down in value and want to buy real assets etc etc.
I suspect the hoarding has already started....I started a few years ago personally

I do get the "physical things are better than money strategy".

I used to get exercised by pump prices shooting up overnight, until I realised the reality of the situation.

2 weeks ago it was 1180/ton, now its 1220/ton, only 5% increase.
That's my price which is by no means the best price around, I don't order enough to get a better discount.

now i'm triple checking myself. It WAS £850/ton on 17th May. It IS £1220/ton today.
Called up supplier and he said most of the cost increase was because this order had a lot more UB and high strength CHS in it. I dunno, the price has went up significantly too...
He did say they have everything ex stock, just needed to fetch in some CHS.
Like i say, I don't order enough steel to get a good discount.

F H Brundle has it for a third that - but then if it actually has it or can get hold of it is a different matter...

I dont think they'll sell it for that if B&M is anything to go by. Either that, or they are behind the times. Someone up here found a supplier with a stash of 2mm mild at last months prices so bought the lot

Company who secured £2million plate has just ordered another £5million of stock.
Can see why they do it, but its like a large scale bog roll run.
The wheels are going to fall off for a lot of people out there very soon.
Im not taking on any new work for the foreseeable due to lack of fabrication company's not having capacity for doing work at short notice.
