Stihl repairs and restoration thread

I won this for £89 on ebay by mistake as no one else bid! That is a spares / repairs Stihl TS400:



(The bottom one. The clean one that needs nothing also arrived today!)

Along with a service kit and belt as I knew that was missing



The seller had put nothing in the add text wise. He forgot to mention the exhaust was partly missing:



But what was a very pleasant surprise was that I added fresh fuel and it fired right up and ran very well. Starts at a whiff of a pull etc. So Carb and engine running order appears superb.

I did wash the air filter housing and fit new filters






Photos are terrible but the piston looks pristine yet original barrell. The cylinder also looks mint inside.




There are some more parts I need but not half as bad as I expected. The blade shaft bearing is bad and there is a cast bracket cracked half in two there with no chance of welding it so I'll find one on ebay or if a member has one spare please let me know



I may spray the blade guard now it's off too because I am weird like that!

After enough searching found a new one cheap on ebay



That's the few parts I need ordered now. I'll get a Stihl Orange semi gloss aerosol made up at my auto factors tomorrow and spray the gaurd over the weekend whilst waiting on the parts arriving. I will put the other TS400 to work cutting up my doorstep.

Some parts arrived today, a huge thank you to @brightspark for kindly providing the Stihl clamp part

A nice original part which will be going in and the China spare hung on wall for a rainy day.



There are 2no blade shaft bearings. For anyone needing this I got the exact bearing X ref from the original parts which is: 6201C3. I got SKF made in Italy bearings part no 6201-2Z/C3 which was a compatible part with the original number.

The new muffler was £16.99 delivered from Rockauto and appears heavy and decent quality.

Another thing that is a pleasant surprise is that this spares or repairs con saw has the highest compression reading of my 3 saws at just under 150psi





It does run excellent. So with these few minor repairs and I am repainting the guard etc it will likely become my main saw. With the other Stihl as a backup. When one goes down it's a PITA even for DIY work as my Husky has delayed projects around the house for far too long! (Over a year actually)

So I will keep both Stihl saws and sell on the Husky.

Yes that's the plan, admittedly I am a Stihl guy anyway all other petrol equipment I have is Stihl.

Small update, I sanded, plastic primed and sprayed some small parts in the correct Stihl satin paint. I didn't fill and sand the parts as this is not a full restoration just a tidy up. Besides, whilst being put to work it will be scraped again so it is what it is, a good tidy up when apart.



The blade guard was blasted but the powdercoat was very thick and very slow to remove. So I concentrated on the damaged areas only and etch primed the whole guard after. I then wet flatted that tonight and tomorrow night it will get 2x coats of the Stihl satin orange paint. Then by Saturday I can put this second saw back together.



And there may be a 3rd TS400 coming which was a late night ebay auction result. Oops


Definitely will leave it at that, they are great saws though and by the time I sell the Husky ill end up with nearly all my £ back and 3x good Stihl saws on hand.

I got SKF made in Italy bearings part no 6201-2Z/C3 which was a compatible part with the original number.

I'm surprised that they use a C3 bearing in a con saw, they're normally used in high speed motors, etc.

This saw is back together again now. Fully tested and working fantastic.







I did blast and spray the handle, it won't stay that nice for long but I thought it was still worth doing when it was apart!

So that is 2no TS400s I have sitting full working order and fully serviced with all new filters.

The third and final one bought also as spares or repairs not running order should be here in a few days time.

Little hint from a TS400 user from the introduction date...before you put it away stop the motor by "fogging" it, that's full choke till stall. Will start much easier when you need it next going through normal procedure.

With the correct blade they are great for cutting steel. A lot easier controlled than a 9" grinder & I find I can cut a lot squarer with one.

Some may not know this but the older TS350 con saw was based on the 08 chainsaw from the 1960's & was in production for years after the 08 was stopped.

I actually prefer the TS350 over the TS400 as its better balanced in use, so much so i have 5 in bits all waiting a full rebuild when i exchange some free time for work time

Phew at least someone is worse than me, I only have 3x TS400s

This is the 3rd one still in the post should have it this week. Under the dust and aparant concrete dip event it appears quite a little used / abused saw.



I already have ordered and received new bolts and a starter pull cord assembly. That is what I can see is missing from the pics, hopefully nothing more than that will be missing as it looks like someone had had the top cover off and not put it back on correctly.

I bought it from ebay as untested/ spares repair sale at £85. First mission will be to steam clean the whole saw then fit a new service kit and fresh fuel and see if it starts. Who knows could turn up seized for all I know.

i had a 350 lent it to a mate for a few month and when i got it back it magicaly changed to a ts400 never did ask him why
