I'd bet melted the crankcase/rank (I think the oil tank is a separate moulding on them) so you might need a tank. The hoses are to the chain side of the machine.

Having thought about it, my earth auger is a pain to start too. Hard pull or it hurts!
It is particually difficult to hold a combi for starting without the drive shaft fitted.
I was lucky but theres no returning it now - unless I can work out a defective cause of the problem.
Do not start a clutched engine with the clutch bell/housing removed! I hadnt considered it. The videos I watched were about saws which have clutch on the other side. This has starter on other side.
So I need to get a new spring. Testing continues...

My red marks are at TDC or as close as could see, for this its adequate. I did two sets incase it were difficult to see.
The right most blue marks are with the strobes default "-10degrees advance", which is roughtly 24 degrees. I set it to zero to get the left of the two marks, which happens to be about 10-12 degrees.
The blue marks are not accurate, its difficult to be accurate while its vibrating all over the place!

Can you get a spare flywheel cheap enough? Maybe best use that, grind out the keyway and make small adjustments, run it and see what improves the starting condition?

I was wrong about the timing light - it does not subtract the set value and flash early. It adds the value as a delayed flash, so if the ignition is set 24 degrees advance, putting that value in the light, would flash at the TDC mark.
Above, I had the marks confused, the right/clockwise blue mark is set at zero, meaning the ignition is set somewhere around 24 degrees advance.
I will see if I can get a flywheel or coil, perhaps a flywheel may include a spare clutch...

Looks like a MS170, drain the oil and fuel. Remove the cover that has the starter rope in it. Remove the screws from underneath the saw that holds the front handle to the saw. pull the handle out of its recess and you will see a small black hose. Pull it out of its recess and you can remove the oil tank from the saw. Clean it up and check for leaks. If the tank/hose isn't leaking the rest of the oil system is drillings in the casing.

I prefer my idea of moving the coil as I wont be modifying anything that is moving at 10k rpm. Enlarging the holes to slots is not going to help much. However there is plenty of space within the magnetic area of the flywheel to lift it up and over on a bracket out of 6mm 6082 bar.
Also messaged some spares suppliers to see if they can get a variable advance coil to fit - that will be the best option.

Today did some compression tests.
G372XP, around 130psi. Runs ok but cyl has some marks.
Hyundai blower, 140psi.
020T 145psi.
McCulloch CS340 195 psi. That was a suprise, used to run great but the carb needs some more attention.
Lidl 53cc, 215 psi.
I wanted to check the 2511 but I need to use a thread adaptor for that and ran out of time. My chinese tester came with one but its not the best quality.

So I followed your advice, which was generally good, I ended up having to remove the flywheel to get the oil tank out, so the good news is nothing is melted, suspect that little rubber pipe to be at fault, will reassemble tomorrow, fingers crossed.

Im thinking it may be worth me putting a decent aftermarket cylinder kit on this saw. @JOEPRO what brand cylinders do you use for your Stihl repairs, assuming they are not genuine ones?G372XP, around 130psi. Runs ok but cyl has some marks.
I do have a cheapy spare "big bore" one, but they appear to have messed it up with oversized ports, as shown on a few YT videos.

Golf or Meteor are first choice if I can find em. Wartec are also OK. To be honest if not really seen any problems with the aftermarket stuff.

Meteor and hyway are known good stuff. I've used gold and it was good. Tbh I've even put a farmertec pot on a husky and it ran fine.
Looks like there is plenty of meat on that coil to slot the holes the other way with a carbide burr.

I made this bracket, moved it over 6-7 degrees.
It appears I was completely wrong as its a pain to pulll over with the ignition off or removed - why did I not test this first? It does run ok, but I removed the bracket.
I dont like the easy start systems but if I can find one to fit this, it may be the best fix.
You could fit a decompression valve somewhere or start it with a cordless drill.
