my 1st year of racing I didn't have brakes just used everyone else to stop second year had disks front and back

Ok bare with me on this , when I was a kid in the early 60 s me Dad and his brother used to take me to Stockcar racing at Wimbledon track and I saw stock cars like the cars you saw on the street ( the cars me Dad had) racing . and it was awesome,,, we loved it , that was the whole point of it ..when did that change .... don't get me wrong the car that woody has built is lovely but why is it called a stockcar ?

It's not changed as such - just many different formulas racing.
Nearest to on the street cars racing now are the bangers (also rookie bangers, prostocks etc)

Safety and chassis tend to dictate how close a car can look to the original now...National Saloons for example can vaguely resemble sierras!
Hot rods are spaceframed with fibreglass bodies..which can look great.
Stock Rods look fairly close...

Big thing I've noticed is that it takes a long time for regulations regarding newer cars to come in....kids still race original minis, sierras in saloons, and corsas/novas instock rods...

Believe me there's nothing stock about banger racing either.

Hi, IIRC the stock car formula specified it had to be based on production car. Over time and evolution they went from being caged to space framed and the body work became less and less until they were using just a roof panel or part thereof from a car. Presumably not even that now?

The trouble is stockcars are an open wheel formula and there hasn't been any production vehicles with a separate chassis available for a long time now.

I used have and race an F2 many years ago that me and my step dad built. Gonna have to hunt for that photo now.
Was great fun. We'd go down to Hartlepool circuit every Sunday for the heats. He had an old Granada banger and I had the f2 with an old 2.0L pinto lump in it out of a siera. God those were the days.
Rules were much less stringent too back then.
Put the windows through and a couple of roof bars and you had a banger.

I won a heat the final and the grand nash at Hartlepool in the f2 it was a nice short oval track

I never won any. I got 2 3rd places and a big plaque for the best presented home built car.
. I did it for quite a few years and loved it. Although I didn't get Many top places I did build up a number of points. One of the proudest days I had was the day I could paint the roof blue. Although I was closer to those red tops mind and they didn't take long before they were on top of Ya.

brought up with stockcars and banger races loved them enough to still keep going back the ones we visited was near great yarmouth not sure they stilll exist though

i did find another when driving sierra in morcambe but that was the banger race there was 2 other sierra vehicles that day one in a race local driver and a friends 4x4 cosworth the distributor cap had failed on the racecar we was the only ones with matching caps and was asked to aid the local driver, both of us said yes as replaced monday and the 4x4 knew the driver
the 4x4 was used not mine but driver won the race distributer returned intact

always loved the races and loved to have a go but so far never had a chance yet but i like the banger races alot

I remember attending a banger racing meet in the early days where a driver was killed when his car overturned and went nose first into the ground. The roof collapsed on him due to insufficient bracing [roll cage made from scaffold tube held together with couplings iirc ] - pretty much ended my spectating there, although I did continue to watch at the Crimond meets.

cowdenbeath is a good track the racing is fierce . lads in the saloon stocks are mental its basically a space frame chassis just with car skins welded on there built like tanks

Aye, been there a few times too when visiting my brother who lives just outside Edinburgh.

There's a young guy in the village here who goes banger racing, he seems to have to prepare another car after every meeting.

Oh god yeah I almost forgot about the saloons. They were iirc about 2 1/2 ton of steel coupled up with pysco drivers willing to use it.
I remember one meeting where my stepdad had heavily plated the front of his banger to the point they wouldn't let him race (unfair advantage) but they said he could go in with the saloons, which he did and regretted after he took a light tap. That's what I loved about it back then, it would never happen now. Last time I went to watch all the bangers were limited to 1600 and the rads had to be front mounted. Where's the fun in that.
