On the cleaning front: I used to 'roll my own' black powder shotgun shells. After a good day's shooting it was simple job to place the barrels in the sink and pour freshly boiled water through them. The residue came off in sheets leaving the bores completely clear and shining. Since the metal was hot after this they would dry in a few minutes so that I could lightly oil them before putting them back into storage.

Going back to security: My first gun safe was a simple cupboard lined with 2mm sheet, but with a door/lock assembly which was invisible unless you knew where it was. The scuffers were quite impressed with my ingenuity and passed it as 'secure' without hesitation. Later on I retasked a couple of ex MOD ammo boxes in different sizes; one for handguns & ammo and a larger one for shotguns & rifles. Although not disguised they were bolted to an internal wall in a bedroom walk-in closet.

They were the days ... Now all I've got is a CO2 full blowback pistol and a 'Ratcatcher' CO2 air rifle. Unfortunately my arthritis makes it impossible for me to hold steady a decent sized handgun or even a PCP air rifle I shudder to think what the recoil from a .44 Magnum would do to my crumbling wrists!

I did try a .44 Desert Eagle (IMI?) damned heavy but at least the weight helped with the recoil

Oddest one I tried was a Beretta 93R (3 round burst fire) soon emptied the 20 round extended mag!

Yup! That was what I had - the IMI (Israeli Military Industries) Desert Eagle. I believe you can now get them in .50 Casull. At the time I thought the recoil wasn't much more than my 6" Python in .357 Magnum. Once I was shooting a series of experimental loads in the underground range at Pheasant Valley Range, Leeds and when I stopped to reload I was tapped on the shoulder. "Can you please stop with the full loads in that? You've just knocked the clock off the wall upstairs"
Those burst fire pistols were the dog's doodahs. The current model - 92FS - is the official sidearm of the US Army in preference to the 1911 A1 Colt. Same knock down power, but more than triple the mag capacity depending on precise model variant and mag fitted.

i have shot a 9mm berreta m92f and a colt 1911 .45 and liked them both. If the pistol ban is lifted i would quite like a glock in .40 a similar round

am considering re applying for an fac though. A lot of foxes on my newest shoot so thinking of either .223 or .243 again. The latter being the last calibre i held before not renewing my fac

Back during the Napoleonic wars where it was all black powder, they poured boiling water down the barrels to clear the residue, and if desperate in battle would pee down the barrel to clear it ! Not sure haw the next shot went off with a barrel still damp from pee !

The Beretta 92FS was recently featured on 'How it's Made' (or was it 'How Do They Do It'?). The US military tested several dozen of them with tens of thousands of rounds each. No jams, no misfires, no loss of accuracy and when stripped down they exhibited no discernible wear or damage. Can you say the same for any of the alternatives? I know my old 1914 Ehrfurt Walther P'08 kept partially ejecting its mag after every third or fourth shot. Now that's the one I could go for if I could only have one pistol - or maybe a semi muzzle loading black powder revolver, eg Colt 1860 Army or similar.

I'd imagine it went a long way astray if they ever caught the tip on the hot barrel.

I had a 1911A1 seriously worked on, target sights, trigger, smoothed feed ramp, opened ejector port etc. lovely to use, luckily I sold it just before they got banned so got a decent price for it.

I thought the government would buy them at market value as they were responsible for changing the law?

I thought this too but he submitted his to our local firearms department and they gave him a notice of destruction for it a few weeks later

Compensation

After the ban on handguns, the government established a £150 million programme to compensate handgun owners for firearms that they handed in to police stations during an amnesty period that ran from July 1997 through February 1998. Handgun owners were able to opt for one of three levels of compensation:

1. A flat rate for individual items;
2. Payment at a rate published for individual items;
3. Payment provided in accordance with an independent valuation. This typically occurred where a firearm had been adapted and its value increased beyond the listed price.

This compensation program was criticized by some who considered that companies were not typically compensated for any losses they faced or incurred as a result of legislative changes.

The amnesty and buyback program led to the surrender of 162,000 weapons and 700 tons of ammunition.
