Washing machine stopped working, checked a few functions, everything seamed ok apart from the motor would only move the drum a few mm then give up. Got online to look up how to find error codes and their meaning, it has a motor fault. No brushes as it's a brushless motor. Took the covers off and while attempting to unlpug the motor noticed a wire broken off with the other end still behind a cable tie.

Pretty poor design having a cable constantly flexing against the sharp edge of a cable tie, I didn't get a photo of the repair but I soldered and heat shrinked it. You would think I would have done something about the poor cable stain relief, but no...

Central heating stopped working today, it turned out to be the heating circuit motorised valve. A new motor from the plumbers merchant ( £12) fitted and my Mrs now thinks I'm a brain surgeon.

Brother in law's indicator was intermittent on his little Citroen C1. Turns out they all do that sir!

Luckily a pattern replacement is £12 off eBay. Just have to remove the steering wheel and shroud to get to it.

Not too bad really just the horizontal sleet making it a bit miserable.

So after successfully helicoiling the Audi A8 water pump bolt I thought actually fitting the pump would be straight forward. I'm replacing a £30 Meyle pump (leaking seal after 2 years!) with a £60 SKF pump so was expecting better quality.

Here's the original Meyle in position, note the pump casting has a curved cut-out for that circular feature on the crankshaft oil seal carrier...


Now the SKF pump...


WTF! Oh well, a few mins with the file and I finally managed to get it fitted in between rain showers. The SKF pump is truly awful compared to the Meyle, well atleast from the outside. I noticed the SKF was considerably lighter and most of that is probably the impeller (thinner casting) but also the pulley, machined on the Meyle vs pressed steel on the SKF, in fact the pressing is so poor it even has a split...


I guess being SKF it probably has a decent bearing and seal.....no wait, what does that say on the box...


...so it could be anything!

Use OEM for VAG, that's my opinion. There's too much crap out there.

VAG make cars not components.....the trick is always to find the OE suppliers

SKF make bearings, not pumps.

Use OEM for VAG, that's my opinion. There's too much crap out there.

I’ve had a good few VAG cars that have had the impellers come off of the original pumps, often at fairly low mileages

I'm right there with you bud, I welded on a new old wheel and bracket to my barrow rather then buy a tyre and inner tube. I always find old barrow wheels at the recycle for a £1 each...

I replaced the original wheel on this one for one i found in a skip. Ive had that barrow 0ver 30 years it must have moved a few tons in that time i feel i owe the old girl something

A really soft rubber ink roller. Outside perished and replacements in short supply.

Dremel in the toolpost with ceramic grinding disc seemed to be as good as anything to remove the bulk

Try freezing them and then cutting with a sharp hss tool

We nearly bought a place in Old Leake but they wanted too much money for the state of it, were up near Louth now

Well not fixed but improved
The S&B has sat on two bed posts since we moved in and I tripped over them once too often today.
After setting it on its feet and levelling with my builders level I took some test cuts using the two ring method. It was .004" larger on the tailstock end so after a small adjustment got it within a thou over 9".

Nice part of the world great butchers in Louth as i recall. The tarry toot as we called it as kids is wickes bitumastic emulsion is bloody useful stuff always have a tin about the place useful for a multitude of things. Not least waterproofing coracles.

I got fed up with punctures and fitted a solid "rubber" wheel problem solved. Bit expensive but seems indestructible .
