That's a blower, I thought it might be handy for blowing dust out the hole but the Dyson was more convenient. It's really powerful, I use it for blowing dust and swarf away mainly, but it's also good for making you look like Clarkson driving an Aerial Atom.

My workshop hoover (can't spell vacume ) blows too, and I can 100% garuntee that every time I go to hoover something, I end up with it on the wrong end and blow stuff everywhere.

Just like USB connectors, there's only 2 ways up so why is it always the wrong way.

Why do they put the paperwork in anyway, no-one ever reads it. If you do & look at the possible side effects, you wouldn’t take them.

I got this the other day with the PO saying the motor and the cap were dead and he'd never had it working. Condition of the mill itself very good and looked like it had an easy life so bit surprised.



The motor had been clearly messed with, bottom of the motor did not align with the upper, the motor half retaining bolts were missing most of the nuts and the wiring had been cut up. Motor had never been removed from the head that was clear.

Turning by hand the motor had a real area of resistance before freeing off then stiffening again.
Took the bolts out, realigned the halves, and spinning very freely, put the bolts back on properly with nuts, took the NVR switch out of the mill head and wired up temporarily to see if it was the motor, cap or both.

Forgive the bodge test rig.


Well I'll be blown, starts on the button spinning freely and silent.
No idea what the POs were at, maybe it had blown the plug fuse just need to wire it up properly and put it back together.

£130 for a working mini mill - happy with that

It was an oily kind of day at work today

Hate replacing spool slices, but as I'm the only one left who actually knows about the things, I got the job.
Original fault was if you activated the spool remotely, it would lock in that direction. Only way to unlock it, other than removing hydraulic pressure, was to physically remove the electromagnetic coil. It was like the remote control section had gone hypersensitive, as the residual magnetism in the coil was enough to lock the lever. I'm guessing an internal seal or spring had failed, as even the supplier hadn't heard of that particular fault before.

Its a Hobbymat BFE 65, quite a nice capable bit of kit for it's size, I think EMCO, Hobbymat, Saupe were a bit related?

Today i fixed my random orbital sander, one of two Sealey ER 150's that dad & i bought 30 odd years ago, one died last week with the awful smell & escape of magic smoke. So it was strip both down & build one good one from the two.
Cracking well built machines, huge sealed main bearings & solidly made. Even the switches are strippable & can be cleaned providing you are careful to not lose the tiny springs! All that was required was a new set of brushes & im hoping that it will see me out.
When i think of the countless boats they sanded down & faired & the sheer amount of work they have done over the years they have to some of the best made power tools out there.

Not really welding related but I need to confess to high bodgery somewhere

I have a cheap magnetic stirrer for cleaning resin 3D prints and the motor gave up the ghost this week. Being financially challenged these days I thought I see if I had a motor to replace the original.

I did it was just "slightly" too long hot melt glue to the rescue.

Here's the business end two magnets on a bit of plate with a brass bush pressed on. Luckily the bush fitted the motor shaft.... With a dab of loctite

Sellotape reel makes an improvised stand.

More stable than it looks ...

New motor is faster so more movement in the IPA bonus!

I need one for mine but reluctant to pay the £100 for the elgoo one at the moment

It was the cheapest magnetic stirrer off eBay only a few quid. A good quality sealed food container Sistema with a 3D printed strainer from thingiverse.

Anycubic have their wash and cure station for £110 on eBay at the moment.

This little cute hand vice.

Was it hell.

It was a real pain to sort out.

At one point it was receployied from work shop into the far reaches of the garden at 6 am.

It was red hot.

The hos pipe was used to retsore calm to the garden.

Post garden and still not free.
The pin holding the wing not has now broken.

A lot of force was used to remove said wing nut.


I had to mount the vice on a threaded bar and get some more heat into it.

I had it red hot, 8" mole grips on the adjusting bar. Lots of oil, this meant much smoke.
That mirgrated into the house via the open window.

My fire alarm works.

In time and with much abuse it started to turn.

Dam thing.

Finished now.

This engine came my way as a bundle.
Thye bundle was brought to supply spares for other engines.

After I salvaged the parts I needed I was left with an engine that had a possible future.

One of the smaller MIS has ladies as members, one lady was/is very timid. This is her work.

We had hoped the new safety valve insert would not be an issue.
The steam pipe broke.

Soldered up.
Here you can see it after it was steamed., and on its base the right way round.

Oddly she does not want to use power tools, yet. Open flames to solder, we can not stope her.

All cleaned up, brush paint finish. I have not told her, yet. The fish eye blemish is down to silicon contamination.

Oh Bother. The cylinder has fractured from the back plate. Replacements are not easy to find. The modern units will fit. But the stoke is shorter.
She was allowed to play with a gas torch. I have a lack of arm hairs, moving on.

Restored, to a point. She is happy, it will go to her room, in the care home. We stoped doing any more. As it is still original. The base plate will not break again. The fire box metal is sound.
