I vapour blasted the larger parts and used a vibratory tumbler for the smaller ones, then had a local finishing firm do the plating. Some bits in passivate and some bright as was how it was originally

Dropped the antenna mast last week for a refurb.

Halfway ready...

Ready to hoist into place, weather permitting.

Fixed this old forces issue Elwell axe the shaft had been throated busting logs over the years. Cut back the bust section and let a piece of Ash in dowelled and epoxied in place.
Head nice and secure now. Good for a few years more chopping

Finally got fence finished down side of house to hopefully keep the deer out. Worst job was getting rid of overgrown trees and old knackered fence. But at least got 70 or 80 larch posts that are getting cut for firewood.

It seems to be roedeer we get coming about. I'm hoping it will keep the bloody things out - its 2m to the top wire. Id be struggling to get much longer posts in by hand. All the fencing people near us are booked up for months so just had to get on with it myself. The deer are fine to look at in the woods but pain in backside when start destroying trees in the garden.

Do you own the land the other side of the fence?

If they manage to jump yours, it’s possible to put another in a few foot back from yours and only a few foot high. Just needs to be a single wire. The idea is to disrupt their ‘take off’ ie move it back to a point which they can’t jump high or long enough to clear the proper fence.

Used a lot to stop predators getting into pheasant runs. @Migmac probably could advise on a more precise distance than “a few foot” suitable for Roe

No its the farmers field next to me unfortunately. Its about 140m of fence, I put in new strainers at corners and 4 intermediate ones as I had them. I could put another wire over them if it came to it I suppose as about every 24m. I think they were 3.2m long and are about 2.2m out of the ground. So could maybe gain couple of hundred mil on height.

That’s a shame. If it’s not used he may let you put a strand a couple of feet out. Depends how well you get on I guess

2m is quite high for Roe to jump, they can do it. More likely they have found a hole to squeeze through. It doesn’t have to be a big hole for them to go through or under the bottom wire. I used to get them going under fences, through holes foxes used, so not huge

Just looked at the picture, I see the problem. That’s not a deer fence, the plain wire on the top half won’t stop deer. They’ll go through that. Needs to be rylock netting the full height

Bugger, didn't fancy trying to manhandle a 6 foot high or whatever height it is roll of rylock on my own. I'll maybe need to get another 200m of rylock say 800 high and take the wires off and pin it on above the lower one, which I think is 900 high. I thought the wire would be ok higher up.

The Roe deer, if they want will just go through the top wires on their side. Red would just dive through !

I'm hoping we don't get anything bigger than roedeer about, that's all I've seen in the garden but there are bigger ones in the woods. Hopefully the bloody things stay there. I planted some not very prickly Holly I thought would make a fine hedge. I was astounded to go down one morning to find it reduced to sticks. I never thought deer would eat it. Not used to dealing with deer we just had sheep etc to fence in when I lived in Shetland.

Most species of holly grow back more prickly after being attacked like that, it's a natural defense mechanism. It's not unusual to see a holly tree that's prickly at the bottom where animals can reach but has smooth leaves at the top where it's not being attacked.

We had a large vegetable garden for years with an electric fence. The fence was less than four feet high, which deer could easily jump over, but we 'trained' the deer to stay away from the garden with the 'peanut butter' method. I remember an article on our local TV station about a woman in Norfolk that had a problem with deer on her property, she went to a local zoo and got a load of either lion or tiger dung to spread around which apparently deters deer. Might be a smelly solution ?
