Perhaps Knurl the knob on the threaded rod and you'll be able to hand roll it almost tight, ready to Allen key it the remaining bit .
Though at school 50 or more years ago & on a C&G fine furniture making & renovation course we just used a single 2" square pop-up pine block set in the end of the carpentry work benches.
Apparently like that to get you to plane in a straight line parallel to the edge of the wood so you quickly get to flatness.
