Have you had a chance to do much signwriting yet? I’ve taken it up but am struggling to do anything decent, need to book up for a bit of tuition.

Hi Mick, I haven't done much of anything workshop wise for a while. Kind of lost my mojo. I think the mists are clearing and will get back to it soon. The last thing I did remotely close to signwriting was a plastic petrol can for unleaded to distinguish it from the ond with two stroke.

Another, not today, but recently I made a Hicksville transmission jack to get the auto box back into the daughter's boyfriend's Ranger.


It's all assembled and back working, but it's not a job for an old man to do outside during the wettest November in years.

Still we all like a challenge.

I gave up helping most people for nowt as not much ever seems to come back the other way.

He's a descent spud and quite handy (as in useful, not he lives around the corner) and will happily give me a hand anytime I ask, or I wouldn't have considered it.

Some more workbench stuff

Screwed the bottom boards onto the drawers and screwed the runners on. The drawer bottoms are made from old pallets that I've dismantled and stored.

Fronts cut to size and added.

Drawer inside shown. Last time I ran the boards through the planer to ensure a close fit. This time I just selected a load of reclaimed pallet boards and laid them out, choosing the straightest and closest fitting to cut to size. Saved lots of time and mess.

Of course, I found some narrower gauge screws that would have been much more suitable once I'd finished. Will remember for the next one.

First coat of wax. A before and after.

Two wax coats on both drawers. Excuse the benchtop. That is very temporary. @fizzy has cleaned me out this month so the decent worktop material will have to wait a while. The scraps of Sterling board are doing a sterling job anyway.


The fronts will be left plain. The front face sits about an inch lower than the drawer bottom so there's plenty of material to hook a finger under to pull out.

I found it easier to make this second one. I suppose experience is helping. There's been a slight mistake with planning. This was made to measure to fit a corner and I've just realised that if I put another bench at 90 degrees to it then the left-hand drawer will be blocked. I have a few more benches to make so I'll make another the same size with a single drawer on the right-hand side only. That will be a blessing in disguise as it's a simpler build with less measuring and faffing. Drawers are a chew on to do but worth the effort.

Well if stripping off the plastics and tank only takes me 15-20 mins now and I only have to do it once then it would likely be done in less than 4hrs

But who would want it 'original' when it is very original now? First of its kind, not only original but also unique and much improved.

"Shaitan machine" for grinding grooves in metal has been assembled, improved and configured. It's not fast, but it does the job I need.

Technically yesterday, but I had my first ever go at photolithography, to make some little etched brass numbers for identifying drawers (which are expected to be removed frequently but are similar-ish sizes):

Photolithography is a much nicer process than the press-n-peel technique I've used before.

Sore thumbs!
The hyundai blower I got a few weeks ago had a split fuel grommet. They sent me a spare tank and extra grommet. The spare tank grommet was also split however looks like it needs full disassembly to swap it so I didnt.

The spare was a slightly different type. I tried various pushing implements. I fear it may take weeks for the skin of my thumbs to recover as pushing was ripping the skin away from my nail.

Cant recommend Hyundai, it seems to be a common problem from the reviews. However its now working and not leaking.

These types of tanks are common. I deburr them if i get asked to fix them

We had to come up with design details on the fly. The design uses 95% scrap metal and the remains of an unknown device with gears that performs the functions of a micrometric feed. Lucky so lucky. I've been wanting to throw it away for a long time. What can't you do when you don't have a milling machine?

Made an airline manifold to go on my tool trolley for when i get around to equipping it properly.





4 fixed 5-metre hoses, 2 spare ports. One ½" port blanked off, might add a larger coupling to it or fit a blowgun with coiled hose.

Made a bit of a bodge replacement for the blower pipe on the scrollsaw. I dislike these things with a passion:



so made up a more traditional style setup to replace it.





It'll win no awards for construction, but it won't p*ss me off looking at it like the original would.

That M4 screw securing the copper pipe is only temporary.
