Today I made another pointless and uneconomic repair, this time to a front subframe on a Fiat Punto.
It's my daughter's car and just failed it's MOT.
I didn't have time to look at it because I was doing other pointless things to the rear of a 3 Series.
The subframes aren't expensive even new and there are lots about, but it's another excuse to get the tools out (and an excuse to put off clearing out the garage)
At least the subframe was easy and quick to remove.
The rot is the same both sides and it's a nasty enough little repair.
Started by cutting the sleeve out using a hole saw.
It's only welded at the bottom, so I made another sleeve I can bolt in to keep everything aligned.
Then just cut out the rot and make patches out of 2mm sheet.
The spot weld drill I bought on here was perfect for removing the spot welds.
Then weld it back together again.
I used a smaller hole saw to drill for the sleeve then opened it up with a die grinder. The nut for the suspension arm stopped me getting propper access for welding so I cut it off before welding in the other side.
I even gave it a quick blast and couple of coats of black epoxy primer.
I masked off the welds so the MOT tester can see the repairs.
My interpretation is it ok to weld this subframe, however they might think otherwise.

That'll be interesting to hear - I'm sure I've read somewhere that repairing stuff like this is not allowed any more, but I can't remember where. I put off doing the front one on my daily driver until it failed on me (fortunately at low speed on a non-busy road) but I'd already bought a replacement, had it blasted, repaired the holes and cleaned it all up so it wasn't obvious that it had had any work done. I put off swapping it because I'd read all sorts of horror stories about how tight the bolts were, only to find I had it out in a couple of hours.

A lot of swarf and a handful of ferrules:
I haven't trimmed the little bit at the end where it separated when parting: I thought I'd leave it there as a very obvious reminder of which is the shabbier end - it'll pull off easily just before I fit the ferrules.

A simple sliding lid box made out of a single plank of 22 mm thick rough-sawn Ash:
What makes it unusual is what it was made with:
Exactly 8 tools: a Stanley 4½, a combination square, a 3 mm chisel, an F-clamp, a pencil, a (poorly chosen) cross-cut saw, some glue and a leather strop. No vice, no bench dogs, no marking knife, no hammer/mallet, no sharpening stone, no cloths/rags: nothing but those 8 tools, the flat surface of the bench and the plank of ash.
