I cut the holes undersize and will mill out to final size on the Chiron.

Couldn't you mount a plate on the chuck face plate and score a hole onto it?but the biggest drill have I could use on the lathe is 16mm

Not got boring bars?Yes, I have done that. Drilled it out to 16mm and was going to enlarge it - it's still in the chuck but I think it'll be quicker to use the hole-cutter.
