Never seen a file with a steel handle before.How have you secured the handle to the file tang. A file card i think is used for cleaning.

I’ve cheated a bit, as it’s not actually attached yet. I figured I could use epoxy, or jb weld to secure the handle. I just liked the idea of a brass handle.

I use a bit of brush handle drilled to knock the file tang into. The idea is the handle is reusable and the file is disposable.

Several things done over the last couple of days.

First is the reason everything else has been getting put off. There must be a comicon coming up, as I’ve made 3 Red Dead Redemption rigs for customers.

The last one was a rush job, which I was happy to do. It’s the Micah Bell rig, and was hard work (second one I made for posting last week). Lots of carving, lots of ‘ageing’ of leather, lots of getting creative with bits of leather and silver paint.

After getting those out the way, I finally fitted the cheap tachometer to my Clarke lathe. Once I did that, I turned diwn a handle for about the only decent file I have found. Most of the files with handles are fairly goosed (can they be cleaned/sharpened?), and the few decent ones have no handles (lucky I have a lathe, then).

Leave the files out in damp weather or drop them into a bucket of water, then let them rust a bit , apparently it helps to sharpen them.

Also put blunt files into a shallow container of sulphuric ( battery) acid for a little while then rinse off, Brings then back to life.

Even though the original are silly money and supplied as OEM for the widow sample rig they are badly modified and fail
Note customer was too cheap to let me make a new shaft

A busy weekend.




This lovely hand cranked wet stone, it was a nice simple restoration.



A quick silver solder job on one bracket.



The reservoir was heavily covered in lime scale, the paint was hiding a lot of rust.



A good descale, Tesco own kettle de-scaler and almost followed the instructions. Followed by a dip in hot caustic soda and finally a over night soak in citric acid. The finish you see is after a brush with a scotch-brite pad.




The reservoir is sealed with a rubber based paint, then the normal under coat and top coat to finish. There is a makers mark, but it is too worn to get any details.

The handle was cleaned up in a lathe and dipped into bee's wax.

The stone is a fine grit and has been dressed square. By the simple act off using a power drill in place of the handle and a dressing tool.

The citric acid bath was out and in use, so in went this seized tap wrench.
This is the second bath, after the first one allowed me to dismantle the wrench and the plane. So all the parts can be de-rusted.



Cleaned up and sealed with hot wax and polished up.

This plane went through the same process.




After de-rusting and paint stripping, the blade is in the process of being re-ground and sharpened.




Under the rust and in the hidden places was a hint of the original colour. So, when in Rome.




The oil can was given a clean as well.



This was given a new bit. Well not new as in shop brought today.
But New in 1978, from Old Mills.
A fibre washer.

No pictures, and I can’t really say I made it, more started putting it back together, but I’ve got the Kerry almost complete.

Wiring needs refreshing, and I’ll leave the suds pump out of the loop for now as it needs repairing.

I’ve also got my welding bench together and welded, well, apart from the legs anyway..

4 day weekend coming up, so I’ll be able to get a bit more done hopefully

I have an identical one in the garden I sharpen my knives on ,so will look for a name and tell you.

Is that for a trailer rig? Looks like it mounts to something with a 2-leg post.

Blade may need to be either replaced or hardened and tempered. We will see how it behaves when worked harder than just a test use.

More progress today,ground the surface for keying the galvafroid,then repousse ( beating) to give the effect of body armour and add to the depth features,mounted Owain complete with shield and stirrup.

I cut out a pair of hoops from 2mm mild sheet. The smaller one is one piece 72cm diameter and the big one is four pieces 134cm diameter.

Next up some spokes to connect them.

Today I marked up a template of a support bracket for the wether vane and discovered rawlbolts from a previous mount,I usually make a v shape bracket from flat bar,with an underslung curved support entering the wall further down and resined in,ill also incorporate a hook over the stone at the apex,most local stone is soft,so I’ll use self tapping bolts(thunder bolts).
This is the view!

That looks far too close to the edge of the stone wall to me, especially as the stones appear to be smallish bits and pieces and your bolts are in, or very close to the mortar. I would come down a lot more.

I’m happy with the position the hole centres will be 120 in,which is inside one of the rawlbolts and my bolts don’t expand,so put a lot less pressure on the stone,there not taking the full load,that’s taken by the hook at the top and the underslung brace.which is 370 below the top stone the photo hides detail,there’s paint residue,I’m fixing in the centre of the stones marked,certainly not mortar( a sin).
