So today or better yesterday (it's already Sunday here in Italy)
I managed to break the knife handle .
Tried to save it til I've decided to destroy it and make a new one
Later in the morning I'll upload pictures about
So ten minutes ago or so I've kicked out a kidney stone without problems or particular pain
It's around 4 or 5 mm in diameter but later it will appear smaller (liquid loss ,it will shrink)
Now is with his friend I've kicked out a month ago , them are closely close now
Later I'll continue the knife project and I will upload pictures

Yesterday was a quiet day, both locally and in the play pen.

No Video link for the MIS, but I was fielding phone calls from the office. So, again, I opted for a "No power tool day."



Got theses two paraffin Blow torches.

Both worked, the bigger one was cooler than the smaller one.
The smaller one ran very hot.



De-greasing.
This was normal washing powder, warm water, atop of a paraffin stove.
You want it hot enough to gently remove the crud, but cold enough to keep your hand in the fluid.

The sawdust you can see. I use it as a scrub to work into the oily based grime. Then it gets used as a fire starter.




Wrapped in cling film and a flour based cleaner.

The cleaner is:
Flour.
Salt.
Vinegar.

Mix equal amount of salt and vinegar, you want the salt to be completely dissolved. So adjust the salt to vinegar ratio.
Then mix in the flour until you have a even mix, think double cream thickness.
Apply and seal with clean film and wait.



This is the results
Most of the dirt has gone.
Don't leave the mix on too long.
You end up with a copper look.
It can buff out, buts more work.

The remains of the mix, add water and paint onto dandy lion weeds.
Kills them in a few days.







Polished up, with Brasso. I did not go for the fully polished look. I wanted to keep the aged look.
Plus, these will be used. Not shown off.




In Flame.
LHS you can see the dull red glow on it already. The Meths has not fully brunt off.

RHS, still warming up, but the shroud is a very dull red.





This was a nice sight. A lovely green burn.
Shame it didn't last.




Another reason I didn't want to overly clean them up.
This label was not visible until I washed it.

The Bigger one has Etched on to it.

But I can't get a good image of it.

Why? The leaves are nice in salad, the flowers are good for bees, and you can use the root for a host of beneficial things.

You wouldn't want to eat those dandy lions.
They are on the route of dogs.

Today started with a repair

It fell off the fridge a few months back, I didn't think anything of it until I came to use it

I whipped out my ancient tube of Bison Hard Plastic Cement

and we were rocking

Some of you know, I like to melt metal.
I do it for fun, to learn and experiment.
I have even managed to cast steel at home.

But last night melt was to separate Alloy from ferrous to weigh the scrap metal in.

First a H&S warning.
Fire safety.
Don't use water on molten metal.
It is BAD.
If you melt is going wrong, you have made a mistake.

I always have CO2 extinguisher on hand.

In this case 5KG.

The metal was 2 dead engines. Kindly donated by a mad grumpy friend.




These are dead. One had a cracked piston skirt the other the alternator was in a bad way. Ham fisted removal attempt.
But The screws, nut, bolts and anything useful are saved for future things.



I use a TYA made fire basket.
This is the warming fire. It's job is to warm the basket up and start the build up of a decent ember bed. That's were the heat is.
I am also pre warming the first items. They had got wet. Water will suck the heat out.
The item in the middle is already showing signs of melting.






Using a cylinder head to hold the hard wood scrap in place. Again it is pre warming.
You want a smoke free fire. Smoke is wasted combustibles. Also it can upset neighbours.



Biggest lump of the night.
3 bolts stopped me from completely splitting the case. They are hidden behind the alternator. So in it went.

Again warming up. This can be dangerous, if you left any oil in the engine.
It will boil.
It will burn.
It will stink.
Be warned.

Alloy when it is getting hot will show you.
Look for "Silver Cracks" appearing in the dirt or the grey surface. They appear, then the alloy starts to crumbles into the ember bed.
Then it flows out.




The cylinder head.
All the nice metal has gone.
I also pull it out of the embers, as it will absorb the heat and slow your melt down.
Last night. I used it to dry out smaller items before they went in.




Capping the fire.
Underneath you can see a lot off run outs.
I covered the ember bed to concentrate the heat.
In the ember bed is a mix of pools of metal wanting to run. Bits with steel still embedded. This will allow as much to flow out as possible.




I also managed to do a mix melt as well.
Two small motors thrown in. The alloy has gone leaving me with the copper rich parts.
They will be washed. The steel will be removed as much as possible. Then I may melt the copper out.

Too the right of them you can see a bearing race and some other odds and sods of the engine. .
They get pulled out as I see them. As they are solid They get dropped into a metal can with water.




Last stage.
Raking the ember bed and all the un-melted alloy.
Not always required, but the night was young and I had time.

The Results.



The biggest lump of the night.
It has cracked into a few smaller bits. But still a big lump.



I haven't washed this lump yet.

There was also about 3kg of smaller scraps. They are already in the bag.



This is 1/3 of a case and a few odd parts.
No point wasting fuel melting parts all ready clear of ferrous metals.

The lower crank shows the stubborn alternator.
Will not be an issue now.
It is still stuck on the crank.

I worked with a guy that cast a steel hammer, about as far as he could throw it ! It belonged to the apprentice and had a lose head that fell of one to many times, it’s probably still in the grounds of Carver barracks that is just across the road from the workshop

Any reason you dont melt in a crucible then pour it? Smash casings with sledge hammer so they fit in.
I want to have another go at melting but I am only allowed clean fires.. gas or electric.
I have 20kg of FJR1200 engine casings to melt down, already smashed up and ready..

Today.. sliced my finger open
Turning facemill by hand to check the inserts, back of finger got wedged between facemill body and the peice Id just cut, with a sharp burr.

Today, while digging through the drawer of procrastination I came across one of those circular tuits that I've heard so much about. So finally having got a round tuit, I got on with a job that's been on my list of things to do for about 3 years: an aluminium fixture plate with 72 holes on a 20 mm pitch.

30 mm thick aluminium plate (that I got out of the skip at work a long, long time ago). The 11 mm holes left and right were already there, I just added countersinks for M10 screws. 36 of the holes are 20 mm deep and tapped M8, the other 36 are reamed 8 mm to a depth of 20 mm and then drilled through 4.1 mm in case a dowel pin gets stuck.

Hopefully that will be useful: spotting 72 holes, then drilling 72 holes 6.8 mm, then drilling 36 holes 7.8 mm, then reaming 36 holes, then tapping 36 holes was quite tedious!
