I still can't really justify needing a leg vice (I got three out of skip recently) and I definitely don't have space for any, but I didn't want to just leave them all languishing until I can move to a bigger place.

Since the workbench is occupied with (urgh) painting stuff, there wasn't much I could do in the workshop today, so I spent some time fettling the table saw and also made a simple stand for one of the leg vices so I can move it out the way when it's in the way but it also looks nice near the door of the workshop:

Not my finest work, but I didn't exactly spend long on it and I've no idea how long it will stay there.

I might copy that stand, they are a pig of a thing to move about and if you drop one! Don't have your toes near it!

If you do, maybe take your inspiration for the wheel arrangement from the Clarke/Sealey etc. bandsaws and mount the wheels on the back not on the bottom so they do not touch the floor when in use.

I can't say I've 'made' much of anything over this weekend, although on Saturday I spent a not-entirely socially-distanced few hours round at a mate's place working on the '81 Turbo Esprit. I'd dragged ny old Morgans' mercury manometers out as he'd stripped and rebuild the twin-choke Dell'ortos and they needed balancing. Then there was beer and pizza to, er, balance

Today I caved in to my mother's pleadings and got the Stilo of Doom up on ramps: recurring low oil pressure warning, oil leak and recently a coolant leak.
The first two are probably directly attributable to a crack or similar in the pressure sender body: it's dripping like a Sunderland grandmother (aged about 32) at a Boyzone concert. Checked the pressure with a gauge and although it's tottering at about 20psi at warm idle it hits 80psi by 3500rpm or so. New switch should fix that; then after grinding out the fasteners to get the necessary plastic bits off from underneath I found a slow drip from the radiator - it looks fine but is one of those modern crimped alloy and plastic horrors so will need replacement.

Took the car back and then got roped-in to a partial garage clearout; after skipping mountains of unwanted... well, 4 letters, starts with c, ends with p and has 'ra' in the middle... the old dear suggested it was perhaps time we start disposing of lots of tools, parts and yes, more junk that the old fella left when he departed a decade ago to that big inspection pit in the sky.
For example: a Black & Decker drill, the type with an aluminium body... nearside door mirror from a Ford Sierra... Devilbiss (I think) compressor (the tank-less type for a constant-bleed spraygun)... old cast-iron bottle jack that looks like it would hold up the world... equally enormous chain hoist/winch thingy that could pull a Scammell tank transporter carrying a Chieftain out of quicksand... files for shifting the barnacles off the Tirpitz... seal kits for the wheel cylinders of some long-scrapped car... aerosols of paint for same... Gunsons compression gauge that wouldn't work with 90% of modern engines because it's too short to reach down the plug tunnels... etc. etc.
Lots of the odds and ends are stored in old steel card-index drawers that were scrapped by Yorkshire Bank when I worked there... in 1980!
There's also the old man's mountain bike which he used for meandering the lanes around Newby Bridge in the Lakes; the parents used to have a static van nearby. Looking at the tyres it hasn't done many miles so I might slip her a few quid and replace my £60 Halfords special with it...

Soon be time to go back to work

On mine, the wheels touch the floor, but only just (they're not taking any weight). The central "trunk" was resting on the floor with the leg vice attached when I attached the arms on the side (with wheels already in place on an axle that joins the two arms together, albeit loosely). I dropped the arms into place so they were only taking their own weight and screwed them to the trunk. They only start taking weight when you lean the vice backwards.

Following on with the conversion for a MIS member with health issues. I was again asked to modify a Claw Hammer to allow a member to try and start getting involved with smaller projects.
Mainly at this stage the nailing up of bird box's and the felt fixings.

He has difficultly gripping the hammer shaft, so a few ideas were bounced around. This is my attempt. If it works, we can apply for a grant to buy his some "officially converted tools.



The starting point.
Using plaster bandages at the care home we mocked a handle that he was comfortable with, worked and was possible to make.
This gave me a starting point.
Leather was chosen for the finished shaft. For a few simple reason, no silicon moulding kits left, I had some leather and I had never done this before.



Home made "Wad Punches", bent to an oval shaped, sharpened. The heated to a dull red and quenched into oil. Cleaned up, heated to a Blue colour and again quenched in old oil. This put a decent cutting edge on. The final edge was done with a small oil stone.



Stamping the leather washers out, on a block that had to be made for this job.
Another fun build.



The idea of gluing the leather in place was discounted, for a few reasons. So an alternative method was made. 2 M6 bolts cut down and brazed on to the end. A steel oval washer was glued into the head end, using JB weld. Turns out this was an over kill, but this is a learning curve.



All the washers fitted into place. The shape is almost finished to his grip needs.
It certainly shows why, crafted tools for those with a medical condition, take so long and cost a small fortune. This was, I think, the 4 attempt to get it as close to finished as possible.
The washers are now held in place by 2 X M6 nuts, that have put the leather into compression. The second steel washer was purly to be for show. But it turns out having it makes compressing the leather easier.



98% finished.
Nuts are still in place. They will remain in place until the final shape of the handle is done. This will allow the leather to be replaced to allow more fettling.

Given a good leather feed and wax, not just have to get it back to the care home.

Not really made this just cleaned it up, i left it in a rag bound with wire then in a bag with some gun wash for a few days and it lifted most of the paint and just finished it with a rotary wire brush in the drill, it seems to be bent maybe from new so i am tempted to straighten it but i think it will break.

I'd be tempted to take a mold of it (pure silicone sealant squeezed into washing up liquid+water makes a good rubber mould) and cast a replica before attempting to straighten it.

So this morning I worked on a new jobsite
Essentially we unloaded almost 3 tons of drywall panels from a truck
I've assembled a new alluminium scaffolding
Went to the café to buy two espresso,an ace juice , two croissant and three small pizzas
After that came back home had a shower , lunch and played to BATTLEFIELD 4 for 3 hours then I had my first driving lesson after the lockdown
I did enough well
I've almost ran over two guys only.
Maybe because the sun , maybe because the emotive state , maybe because I have to learn again how to drive
Anyway didn't got kill myself or hurt anyone so it's a small step for me a big step for funeral services companies

Brother wanted a shelf with a hook bar for his kitchen, got me to roll some stainless rod and weld it up.
Not sure on the wood but it's lovely, we gave it a wipe over with linseed oil and it's a quality finish

A local place got me some M6 Dome nuts, so I didn't have to order some in.

They got fitted to the hammer and it was taken to the care home.
It was tried out and deemed to be a great successes.

Until we are 100% sure the shaft is perfect they will remain in place. I think that they will be there for a long time.



There is talk about fitting a wrist strap to it, in case it flies away in use.
