Got these 10" pipe grips restored today.
Not sure on the original paint scheme, but it'll do.
Using rusty old tools isnt a good look when you're working with shiney stuff.
They're mainly just for home, but sometimes having an extra pair is handy so they will end up in the work box from time to time I'm sure.
Big bro is underway now too.

This brace arrived in my care the other day.
Fluid sprayer and a medium size blow torch.

Plant sprayer.



In bits, the item second from the bottom is an alloy rod, with brass fittings, in a steel handle.

This image it had been remade.



Hand cleaning and polishing. it was night time, so no power tools.


Blow torch.

A PITA.



It is not a brass body, all the fittings are well stick, but I have a plan. Not a cunning plan. But a plan.



Make a new handle.


Strip the paint and clean up as a unit.





De rusting. Vinegar and flour.

I just sandblasted 5 pairs and painted them black. all over not as posh as yours but functional .I don't like rusty gear but don't have to be showroom condition your cleaned up ones seem to have shrunk

Not that posh... twist knot brush all over, iron paste on moving jaw, blue spray on rest, then just shine up the cheeks with an interleaved polishing pad.
I did give the teeth a very light tickle with a cutting disc to restore their bite.

Pigeon poo shelf horizontals

It was still damp, and started to rain a bit but continued anyway. Rubbish but adequate for a shelf unit. Got a few lung fulls of zinc fume. They will get the minimum grinding tomorrow and some thick paint
Ordered some 0.6mm wire for next time. Couldnt get a suitable wire speed with 0.8

Today I (almost) finished making a bird box. I made it more for practising techniques (mostly power tool ones this time) than because we particularly needed a bird box, hence the over-done joinery and the possibly unnecessary roof covering.

Made from oak (joined from narrow bits into wider bits) with the roof coated in some lead flashing that came off my roof a few years ago and which I battered flat and then hit repeatedly with a ball peen hammer to give it a dappled appearance. The roof (in three pieces) is currently only held on with gravity as I haven't decided how I'll attach it yet. For scale, the hole is sparrow sized (32 mm) and the fingers of the joints are 9 mm.

The lead still needs trimming at the back and fixing in some way yet to be determined.

The roof has a couple of blocks of wood spaced to match the internal dimensions of the bird box and is held on with a single stainless screw from behind so it can be taken off for cleaning if/when required:

Put a posh stainless steel pin in the internal front block through the apex wall so you can pull it out for cleaning the box out in November . I've done several bird boxes like that. I'd also put a alu or stainless 32 mm holed washer with at least a 55 mm OD dia to prevent squirrels chewing their way in to get at the eggs of chicks .
I've had to make my own new nesting boxes an inch & a half deeper from the entrance hole to the bottom of the box because I saw a squirrel with its arm deep inside a nest box fishing for baby blue tits. To assist the fledglings in getting out the deeper boxes I've used a Dremel to put a ten or more 8 mm spaced horizontal cuts on the intern front face for them to scramble up when they're ready to leave the nest .

A fiver. A woman brought a bread maker round as'The paddle thing doesnt go round' so I tapped it with a hammer handle and now it does.she got a speaker thing out of the cat that had a
stuck battery in it, so I banged it on the bench and the battery dropped out, about a minutes 'Work and she forced a fiver on me.Wish I got that hourly rate a bit more often...

Finally the canvas got stretched over my canopy featured previously,1 prospective customer came for a viewing,and one of the national museums is keen ,but not on my timespan.the baler twine will be replaced with S/S cables.

It's got a stainless screw from the rear that serves the same purpose (you have to take it off the wall for access, but you'd need to do that anyway to clean it).

That's a good point. We don't get many (any?) squirrels round here, so I'm not too concerned about it at the moment, but I might add a washer if I ever get round to moving house.

Shelf unit is Done! (Opposite lathe, photo from doorway) More than doubling my usable shed storage area. I have soo many items for it, there will be zero spare space by tomorrow.

Except Ive lost two of the side horizontals. I am sure they will turn up, just after the shelf gets fully loaded.

Shockingly accurate! I started repairing the shed at the start of July, didn't think it would take much more than a week, I'm putting the felt on today!
