Today I made a tidy

Replaced the air filter on my car
Just for do something ,I've eventually checked the engine oil level
And discovered I've been driving with no oil .


So I've filled up with Selenia 10W40 (which is common here for our weather conditions)
I'll take the car to a mechanic .
Oil alarm light does work but it did never light on to warn me that there was no oil .
The engine is running well , and did never show any symptoms of lack of lubrication .
When I got the car home the oil was full level , perfectly clear and clean .
It's been maybe 7 weeks ago .
I've discovered a loosen bolt on the rocker arms cover .
It's hard to me to believe that in 180km ,2.8 litres of oil could have leak out from there

Any smoke out the back? I had an e46 330ci that would burn through nearly two litres/1000 miles. If it's leaking out you'll see leak quite clearly if it's lost that much.

You should be checking your oil every day.
Now that you know it's a burner or leaker, you must do that.
2.8L in 180km is a helluva lot - there must be blue smoke.

You should be checking your oil every day.
Now that you know it's a burner or leaker, you must do that.

I know that's an huge amount of oil in not so long time .
Anyway no smoke ,I've even put a piece of cardboard under the exhaust pipe and it was clean and remained clean even after few seconds at 7000 RPMs .
The engine is covered with oil ,I believe that the head cover gasket is gone .
There were few loosen bolts on this cover ,I hope that's just this .
Hopefully connecting rods are fine ,I wouldn't survive at seeing a piston shot through my car's hood .

I suspect you mean the rocker cover gasket [right on top of the engine] had slack bolts - if so, remove the cover, clean everything thoroughly and refit, using a new gasket.

If the head gasket had blown, the engine would be down on power/losing coolant/in small bits or any combination of the foregoing.

Bolts were not tightened

Looks just like when I had a rupture on the oil cooler hose, sprayed nearly 8 litre engine oil on the exhaust

Or when one squad member filled 20 litre kerosene in a nearly empty petrol tank, no need to deploy smoke that day

Surprisingly not a huge amount, but there nonetheless.
I had an A-series lump that wasn't run in right and consumed oil at 60 miles per pint. There was a haze behind the car I could see in the mirror, but not clouds of it.
New set of rings and run in like I stole it cured that.

Don't actually spend much time at the metal lathe (aside from teaching the basics) but this afternoon I actually made things I'll actually be using... thought I'd better get in there whilst I can at work as there's a general feeling in the air that this may well turn out to be more than just a two week holiday...

Found some rusty old 35mm Round bar and after giving it a good clean with some Emery paper on the lathe I made four 28mm dogs/stops. Hadn't done any precise measuring but I made them slightly undersize at 27.85 - and they work a treat.

Now, this might not look like much, but it is my first bit of machine code I have written without any help or template or copied from someone or intervention by anyone, all my own work. A simple 30mm circle:

The oil warning light indicates low oil pressure, not low level . NEVER rely on the oil light to indicate level

Socket for this buddy gets crispy.
450A beast of a machine.
AD conversation was not consistent.
Turns out to be bad contact on plcc socket.
Try to find a torch for 4mm tungsten.
