That's a very old trick - useful though! I've used a two-leg parallel bearing puller in a similar situation, rotating the legs (suitably clamped together) rather than the threaded bar. I've also seen three welding rods fused onto the nut and then twisted together with a bolt jammed between them and the stud - does the same thing, just requires a bit of thinking and seeing what is to hand.
