The door is less than a foot away, how dumb would you have to be to try to get out that window

Depends if there is an internal wall in the way . . . or a burning door . . .

my thoughts, exactly, and since when did the fire brigade ask for keys ?, in the event urgent access is needed, an axe would pretty much open anything they need?

Given it takes a not so long time to die from smoke inhalation . . . and it takes a bit longer for the fire brigade to arrive, work out whats what, and that you are on the floor the other side of barred window . .. I think being able to self-extract right at the begining, or at least open the window to scream would be a good thing!

Just a thought - when the Fire Brigade came round offering fire prevention advice and free smoke alarms, they gave my neighbour a right bollocking for having the windows locked with a key . . . the time taken to find a key and unlock them to get out if other methods of egress were blocked could be life threatening . . .

That's why one window, usually upstairs, should be lock free. Fire escape route.

Finished welding these last night. I was able to pre-set the bend in the flat base for the treads, however they weren't perfect and still needed finessing with the press.
The gap on the side plates needed opening back out on all of the brackets, I made a little jack out of an M20 setscrew.
These need to be absolutely accurate, so it wasn't a fast job! And I've definitely under-quoted. But, still. Nice enjoyable work.
Ready for paint tonight.

Another metal storage facility, this time over the window.
Two 5mm thick brackets, lined with wood at either end, and an old bicycle wall bracket (carried the weight of 2 adult bikes).
Gets all my long lengths from off the floor under the cars. Just right for 3m lengths.
Currently there is approx. 135m of 6mm rod up there ...

Some hooks for a Holbrook lathe collet tray. Blasted the three originals, made six copies. The customer has got their work cut out with a grinder and a file to get the curves.

I had to look at it 3 times, and only knew they weren't cast because I knew you'd plasma cut the hooks themselves!
Burr or stone? Or both?
If I tried that with a die grinder and burr, I'd end up with a mess...!

Just a burr. Started out with the Pferd Steel range, but they can make a right mess as they're incredibly aggressive, then swapped to the Pferd TOUGH range which are a lot more controllable a little less metal removals.
