Just a thought Hood. Would there have been any advantage if the pods were wider at the transom, there would have been more bouyancy. Most of the time pods have been put on here is to compensate for extra weight, just to lift the rear out of the water and improve running. I suspect that the outboards will be lighter than what was taken out

The reason they are going to outboards is that the Bravo Stern drives were costly and problematic and also the inboards were tightly packed in each hull and a nightmare to work on. The outboards and alu used will be roughly the weight of the two inboards, then there will also be the weight of the diesel donkey engine to add to that. The buoyancy of the pods should make up for the weight being further back and I am actually hoping it lifts the rear a bit, time will tell.

Good morning Hood, I didn't phrase my previous comment correctly. I know with fishing boats 'weight' is always added and never removed. If the pods were almost full width of the transom it would increase the bouyancy . Here by the time pods are considered the back end is much over weight and trim is poor, so hence the biggest that can be put on. From what I have encountered put 'bigger' then you are safe when ultimately they put extra weight on
It also has to do with the customer 'what' he/she wants. If they say 'that' size is what I want, then that size is what you get

My Father in law used to be a sheet metal worker until he retired after 40 plus years in the job. You can imagine the changes he has seen.
But due to an accident in August 2016, he lost the use of one of his eye and ear on the left hand side. This meant he had to give up and his tools and hobbies.
This led to his tools being left and unloved. As a Christmas present I am cleaning them up and getting them to a state were they can be used, if not they will not deteriorate if left.

All his lead shot, steel shot and sand filled dressing bags are all done. But there was a wooden mallet tool what I had no idea what it was. Well It is used to bash and loosen up the contents of thee bags and help the lubricant disperse.
In other words you beat the shi......... out of them before use.


Well, he had busted the shaft not in a fit of rage. MIL thinks it was. But because he missed and hit the vice.

The only new bits is the narrow shaft. But that was scavenge from another mallet what had a missing head.

The handle was cleaned in the lathe and polished with bees wax and linseed oil.
The shaft is beech, and wiped with bee's wax.

The head is Holly and is hard as oak. The only new wood is the handle, even the wedge is original.

Yes, even the cord is original. Just thrown into the washing machine with my work clothes that way Mrs TYA does not nag me.

Made a mess of a brake drum today. Brake linings on one of the vans decided to part company with the shoes and jammed up solid, no amount of a beating with a 4llb persuadius helped so I chopped it up with a thin disc

Next time, when the shoes detach from the metal. don't try to beat the drum off.

Hammer round the edge with a heavy soft face hammer then beat the drum if you are beating it on.

It will shift or break the linings enough to allow the drum to be pulled off.

More of my Father in Laws tools.
This little hammer was a mallet he used to made his wooden dollies. He said it was a task he was given when he started his career in metal working. He said if the mallet broke in 6 months you had to redo the whole 6 months training again. All the tools he made in training was subjected to regular inspections.

You see it in the finished state.

It was black with dirt oil and old wax. So a wooden frame to hold it in a Plastic tent. I used a cheep heater to warm wax and varnish remover and let the vapour rise and strip the junk off. The sludge made a very good fire starter.

Head is heart of oak. I cleaned some of the dings off and squared the faces off. But not enough to remove the " essence" of the use. Mini Me quote there. Not mine.

The handle is almost like a spruce wood with the knots. But it is a lot harder and there is no smell. But the smell is not surprizing the amount of time what has passed.

The old short 9/16 dowel what connects the head to the handle was wedged at both ends. The handle was a "hidden wedge" So as it was spit I drilled it out. I used some modern beech dowel as a replacement turned down to suit.
The wedges are oak.

The finish is linseed oil and bee's wax.

I thin he will like.

Mate of mine marked the handles of his small hammers "persuasion" (rather artistically burned in with a soldering iron).

His sledge hammers are marked "coercion"

He also carefully cut gun stock style checkering on his favourite claw hammer and mallet.

He's a bit strange about some things...

If it's a Dispatch/Expert/Scudo then I can confirm that the Vark method of drum removal works.

God knows why but it seems like sticking back brakes are a regular problem with them. I used to do mine about twice a year.

Two of my father in laws hammer cleaned up as best I could. The lower one has his own alloy faces.


The top hammer is a leather working hammer. It was used when making gaskets on Air ducting.

The lower one is a adapted slater hammer used for punching holes in sheet metal and then dressing copper rivets.

They will be cleaned up.



2 more need I say more.




Not much to be done here. I need to make or get hold of the tool to allow be to fit new faces. If needed.





His small Anvil made by his own hands. It is a lot heavier than it looks.

Lie his anvil some dollies, again hand made. There is another 27 in his box's. A good mix of manufactured and hand made.



My favourite I left to the end. A Thor Nylon faced hammer on a long shaft. All marked up Thor but I can find no reference in Thor's back catalogue.

The hammers dollies and all thee rest are good stuff. Well made well used.
The shafts are worn to his grip and usage. Thy feel uncomfortable in my hand when I try to use them.

The plan is to preserve them until he is in a place to want to use them again.
