Not just the American boats. When I worked in the Dockyard at Chatham the props of our boats were kept covered with tarpaulins when on the dockside. This was allegedly to prevent satellite observation.
They still are. The propulsor stays covered even in the build hall and isn’t uncovered until it’s in the water
I remember the props of the nuclear subs were always a closely guarded secret. Evidently one got damaged somehow and they went to great lengths to recover the broken bit. Worth a fortune to certain people apparently.
