Not just the American boats. When I worked in the Dockyard at Chatham the props of our boats were kept covered with tarpaulins when on the dockside. This was allegedly to prevent satellite observation.

They still are. The propulsor stays covered even in the build hall and isn’t uncovered until it’s in the water

I remember the props of the nuclear subs were always a closely guarded secret. Evidently one got damaged somehow and they went to great lengths to recover the broken bit. Worth a fortune to certain people apparently.

If you can see it you can model it and if you can model it you can tell what it’s sound signature is.

If he owner / curator of the sub would like to set a couple of dates a few months into the future for a guided tour or two for forum members I’m sure quite a few would like a wander round a Russian sub .....

As I’m in Manchester and would have to make time to pop along a date available some time to arrange time off work (train fare V driving ) fiscal decisions would be good (would share transport / fuel / coffees if anyone fancy’s sharing costs if we can agree a date )

Nothing much else to say except don’t dive with the conning tower windows as is .

I drove past the sub today, and I saw that they are doing road works and there’s no access to Strood Pier or any of the river frontage at the moment.

How do you get out to the sub now? From Rochester?

You could (probly still can..) park on the Rochester side and dinghy across, that's how we used to get to the crane barge etc.

I too would be interested in seeing it. Would take the old man down with me as his dad (my grand dad) was dunk twice during WW2 on corvettes by there German counter parts
