This is another vice I got with that Parkinson. It's one of the old blacksmith style bench vices. It just seemed too cute not to get.
This one has been derusted using citric acid. Decided it was time to give the stuff a proper test, so I've been trying a few bits in it of late, but leaving them in the solution for at least a few days rather than just a day or so. It seems to have a better effect than a quick dunk. The extended soak seems to cut past the pickling and etching effect which a day or so soak gives the pieces, so leaves a brighter and smoother surface. Still not as subtle as electrolysis, but the results are a vast improvement over my initial tests with the stuff.
It's had a lathering of Linseed oil on it now.
That'll be left overnight, and then any excess wiped off. Just leaves a fine film of oil that way, so this one will remain looking natural

The poor thing should be allowed to retire peacefully , it looks as if its suffered enough
Definitely a good example of why not to use a vice as a press.
If you do retire it Tigman, for the love of god don't scrap/bin it. That would be handy for spares if nowt else.

it made me jump when she snapped , its been there since 1957 when the workshop was built , its fixed to a 6 inch post and concreted in , its the handiest vice ive got , used for pipe threading and all sorts , if I cant fix it I will have lost a good tool !

When it comes to welding, I'm ne'er use nor ornament. Besides, I think that would require the magic of someone like Merlin himself. By the looks of that, it's going to be a test of skill even for a good welder, though as to whether so called ductile iron is any different/easier than cast to weld, I know not?

Sweet. Worst case scenario, by the looks of it, it'll end up as a single jaw vice. Easy enough to change the inserts on that pipe jaw side to cater. Btw Tigman, any chance I might copy/use your photo's above for future reference/use?

Cheers. Btw, if you become (in)famous as the man who killed a Swindens, it wasn't me, honest.
I don't see any redeeming features on that broken vice - it would be on a one-way trip to the melting pot if it were mine

The more I look at that broken vice, the more I can envisage that as a rather tasty looking single jaw, rotating head vice. With a bit of time, work and effort, that really could become something quite nice and unique. I'd have a field day using the damage as an excuse to tart that one up, if it were I. Imagine something similar to a York, (or their American copy, a Wilton), vice.In fact, if you do decide to replace that one with something else Tigman, I'd be quite willing to give you a few notes for that one. Just something to bear in mind rather than the possibility of taking Pete's route, if you decide to call it a day on it.
