Also because of the digital control on some of our tig inverters we can have Job store facilty and M.A.C.S (Modulated AC Arc), this is a special Hybrid arc which is Like traditional AC welding with a DC componant superimposed onto it. This makes the Arc incredibly stable at low amps, is great for welding thin section Aluminium and also welding joints with a high level of difference (Eg, 8mm to 1mm Plate).

Dear Matt, which Lorch TIG machine has MACS? where could I find more about its advantages over common AC welding?

I found at Kemppi MLS 2300 that hybrid arc is excellent for controling weld pool at aluminium, no matter how thick the piece is... In normal AC mode, the welders say they must "run" with TIG torch, but with that hybrid arc, the pool is much more controlable...

zst, the T180 and 220 have MACS. Not sure about which other machines.
I'd lke to know the advantages of MACS too, as I have a T220. Nice machine - lots of bells and whistles, but I don't know how to get the best tune out of it!

Me too, I often get lost in the parameters menus and had to do a master reset just the other day..... love to be able to get the best settings out the machine...

MACS (Modulated AC) is as you already probably know where the machine switches between AC and then DC +/-.

If you get the machine to switch to DC + then the heat for that cycle is transfered to the Tungston and therefore will offer a extra cooling phase, this is where it can be advantageuous on thinner section or disimerla thicknesses. You can set the Frequency that the cycles switch, up to 5 Hz and also choose what percentage of the cycle will be spent on AC or DC+/-.

Its set up and use are simerla to using a conventional Pulse.

However I must say that for most applications that I have came accross, conventional AC mode works just fine, when combined with AC Freq/Balance adjustment and with the use of a footremote on very fine jobs.
