The next Cat has landed

Bit more done yesterday and today. Yesterday was mainly boring holes through the stern box and working out how and measuring up for steering, today was bait box in the corner of the table. Had to cut the table legs as the skipper wanted it closer due to him having the table more aft than normal. The strength in the legs is still retained as the box is welded to them and probably actually adding strength.

Also got the rear section of the table welded up today, will weld on the hinges tomorrow and hopefully get the support frame made.

Yes and no. Obviously I try and keep weight to a minimum but also there has to be strength and durability built in. The table itself can have well over a tonne of gear stacked on it.

More or less finished welding on the Cat, today I was welding on wear bars on the table legs and a few other places where the ropes run past but the thing that took most time was the rope guides at the stern. Normally they are not too bad to do but due to this Cat being higher decked the aft section of the table doesn't have to slope up much, in fact it doesn't need to slope at all but a slight slope is advantageous so that the gear does not slide off the back when punching into the weather. Anyway because of the lower angle it somehow made getting the rope guides correct quite hard. They need to be positioned so when the rope slides over them it lands on the table and after that it runs along the table but it was going to be catching near the end of the table and running on the guide for the first few creels and would soon wear a groove which would then make it run there all the time.

I will be back up tomorrow fitting the steering arm bushes I made yesterday.

I will then be able to measure the correct drop down required for the arm and also get a few other bits and pieces measured up and I will then be able to head back to the workshop and get the last bits made up over the next few days.

That is me finished at the Cat, still have a couple of deckwash fittings to make but they will be done at the workshop tomorrow.

Starting to look the part now especially as the lettering/numbers were applied over the weekend.

Next one arrives 23rd of April so I will be doing it all over again shortly.

Another quick update. The props are not the correct ones as the B word is screwing everything up and they are not in the country so the ones used are, I think, Mercury ones. He is not managing to get full revs, only 5000rpm and the 150Hp is produced at 5500 and they should rev to 6000, even so he is getting 29 knots so not too shabby. Most of the time they will cruise at 18-20 knots but it is always nice to have that bit extra if required.

Not so much a smaller prop, the pitch is what can make the big difference,

Nope, delayed again, supposed to be here, well supposed to be a few times but the latest was the 23rd and they arranged for the one they have just sold to be picked up, taken to Wales, lorry to Isle of Wight to pick up the new one and then back up the road. That didn't happen because of the latest delay so now they have to pay for two trips and they are not cheap.

Depends, they can be paid back in a season easily if it is a good one but at the moment there is nothing to catch and with the B word and also the C word the prices are rock bottom as they can't sell them so....
Worrying time for them and I suppose me as well.

All collections and deliveries are being delayed at the moment. All 6 pallet networks beyond breaking point. Its so bad they suspended collections for a few days down to Cornwall/Devon just to try to clear the backlog. Easing of Covid has seen a huge increase in freight and so many drivers went back to Europe there is an even bigger shortage.

It is not the transport that is the problem, it is Cheetah that hasn't got it finished yet. It was supposed to be started first thing in the new year and delivered some time in Feb. I don't think they actually started until well into Feb and then it was supposed to be end of March I think. Then 23rd April, now it is ???

Ahh I was on about the prop!
Perhaps they are behind due to Covid restrictions and supply problems?
Seems to be everything is delayed or out of stock.
Even obscure things like cement mixers and lathes are in very short supply

Ah ok, was thinking you were meaning the Cat itself.
Yes everything is screwed for a variety of reasons, the engines themselves were a PITA to get as they attempted to send them, from Holland I think, several times but they got turned back at the UK as far as I am lead to believe. In the end I think Yamaha themselves had to bring their own lorry over with the engines destined for here.

I didn't build the boats, just fitted them out.

All 10m the two in the front are slightly narrower, the two at the back are I think the same beam, 4m if I recall.

The harbour I'm sure I recognise its not somewhere close too Inverbervie, is it John's haven or a bit closer too arbroath?
