Guy I once knew hit a 12 bore cartridge in a vice with a hammer. He was missing one and a half fingers, and you might say he wasn't the sharpest tool in the box..

Back in the 1950/60s the local gravel pit was a dump for a lot of WWII 0.303 bullets. These were recovered, by swimmers, by the hundreds.

We used to make gunpowder/cordite trails around the school playground during play-time and set it alight towards the end of the playtime.

Some used to take bullets to the local wood, jam them in stumps and fire them off using an airgun with the barrel held against the primer.

Up until 1994 the MOD were sending WW2 vintage 0.303 rounds to India for recycling.
Some were recycled back to 0.303.
The bulk melted down and formed into 7.62.
Oddly only 20% was 7.62 Nato.
The rest was Russian 7.62.

We tried that in the shed with dads shot gun cartridges when we were kids, never did get one to go bang.

So we poured the powder out and put it into cigar tubes with a marble on top. Put a match to the touch hole and they went PHUT and made small dents in the skirting boards!

Yes that bit was in our bedroom..

Just sit a 12 gauge cartridge on the barrel,of an airgun and fire the pellet into the primer. All that will happen is the cartridge case will split and spill the shot charge. Nitro powder only burns fast enough for an ‘explosion’ when under pressure.

I once got singed when burning quite a bit of nitro powder, from industrial solid slug cartridges, in a bucket.

I used to reload thousands of 12 bore cartridges in my earlier years - it was far cheaper than paying ten bob for a box of 25.

I recently acquired an old Triumph brand steel cabinet and today, finally got round to ripping out the old home made shelving to put in my own home made shelving. Whilst doing so, I found tghis lying in the bottom of the cabinet:

Apologies for the lack of a mug for scale, but its just under 25mm long and about 5.5 mm in diameter.

Apart from the obvious, any other suggestions?

The Deckel I learnt to mill on had a collet chuck that used inserts like that. Similar to a Clarkson collet chuck

I found this on the pavement outside next door neighbours but they don't have a clue why it's there or what it is.

It has a 3.5 mono jack plug and ghe bulbous part slides in half to reveal a small battery.

Any suggestions what it might be?
