In fact, that's exactly what I think is going on here, except the idiot who fitted the 3 phase plug used the wrong colours in the cable, and the blue is actually carrying a phase.
So you can mark those 2 terminals off as a phase, assume the next in line is a phase and the one on the end is the neutral?

Yep, power switch is in the front, three position DC-off-AC.
On the back is a 240v - 415v selector switch. The connector block runs up to the selector switch.
The blue is carrying a phase. Brown-L1 Blue-L2 and Earth (black not connected either end).

2 live and neutral sy cable then, proper farmer stuff, bin worthy as your terminal block needs all the phases in there, although I'm not sure why as transformer machines only ever use 2 live and Earth from the 3 live and earth 3 phase supply.

Just need to figure out which blue wire in the terminal Block is the neutral and you should've good to go then?

I will be running the machine from 240v single phase. It was my assumption that the block took both 240v single and 415v 3 phase supply lines at the same time I.e. Two supply cables with the switch to select which is in use.
But I suppose that only ever one cable is physically wired into the back.

It all makes sense now. On 415v you would have all 3 phases and neutral hooked up. The 24v transformer would then run off one phase and neutral as Pete said therefore only getting 240v
On 240v you just have neutral and the single phase hooked up which will still supply 240v to the transformer.
So I've just got to find which line is neutral and which single line runs to the transformer.

Ok so I've put the welder back together now and hooked it up. All seems ok so I tried a little test.
I am waiting on a earth lead for the machine so I stuck a piece of half inch drill rod in the positive Dinse socket and then struck an arc in the end of that. HF works and stikes the arc and then the main arc seemed to do its job an create a pool. Remembering that I am testing without gas it all seems ok.
I have an Arc lead set in order and a set of consumables with blue tungstens, once they turn up I will pop out an pickup a 20l bottle of Argon.

Can anyone recommend a source of a regulator to fit a side exit rent free type bottle that I can then bolt a flow meter too? All the side exit regs I've seen seem to have the gas output at the bottom meaning that the flow meter would be horizontal rather than vertical.

I posted the pic above of the wiring after your comments earlier Hugh. Seems the two phases of 415v were in numbers 1 and 2 in the input block. After testing Neutral was supposed to be in 4 and L0 / 240v in 3. How it was even powering up before is beyond me.
