ive had the problem of breaker bars not strong enough and they flex which doesn't help so I just welded the socket onto some 4 inch flat bar no flex at all and works a treat especially as the flat bar was 5 feet long

After heating it red hot I'm not sure I'd want it holding my wheel on anyway!
Wouldn't the strength of the thing be affected?

It laughed in the face of my impact gun! The breaker bar probably broke at say 50kg pull at 2m ~1000Nm

I thought maybe the "impact" would have shocked it free.

If you did what I say re the welding you could bolt the wheel back onto the hub have the wheel flat on the ground on its tyre with the back side of hub upmost and impact it round without having to grip the hub in a vice etc the shock from both sides will undo it.

Ive welded large nuts to the top of sockets for super tight stuff, allows bigger socket over the top then use a 3/4 or 1" bar or windy.

When I'm working on my cars, I always seem to end up with problems like this that take an inordinate amount of effort to sort out, funny how that never happens on wheeler dealers, a quick squirt of WD40 fixes everything for Ed.

Would be a better show if they covered some real life problems that I come across.

There is a member on another forum that I belong to who has contacted Mike Brewer with regard to a couple of the shows, fair play Mike actually responded and was very honest about some stuff that was never in the show.

Use a 1/2" to 1" impact adapter & a 1" breaker bar. Or pop down to your local tyre place that does lorries.

Get them to use the 1" air gun on it.

You could even weld an old lorry wheel nut to it to save an adapter.

That would have been a pinch to do with our inch gun at work, couple of dougers and it would have popped.

BTW the guys watching me do the merc truck said it was impossible !! but it wasnt!

Not exactly 'low cost' perhaps but investing in a powerful impact wrench is the way forward. Most of the tight stuff is off within a couple of rattles and you almost start to wonder if it was actually tight in the first place. The amount of time and effort saved can be phenomenal.

I have a 36mm socket I used for hub nuts before I got a 3/4 drive set. I welded 3' of 1 1/4" piping onto it and an 8' length of 1 1/2" piping nicely slides over it as an extension - it's never failed me yet!

You could weld some piping onto the side of the socket which would leave the square hole free for a torque wrench.

Needed to do this on No 1 son's X308. I made a 'special tool' for the job - too mean to buy the pukka Ford Special Tool or the big 12 point socket that can be bodged on.
Measured the number, diameter and PCD of the 12 (?) 'lumps'. Drew it in Sketchup. Printed it out. Glued the drawing to a piece of 8mm or so plate. Drill, Dremel to cut out the 'socket'. Welded a bit of plate on top. Welded the whole contraption into the end of a 1.5m length of heavy wall RHS.
Offered it up, sacrificed a passing unicorn to the Small God of Stuck Nuts and whilst son steadied the 'socket' on the nut - heaved. Both came off easily and much to our mutual surprise.
Must say we were glad the vice was bolted to 50x50x4 bench frame which in turn was bolted to the masonry wall of the garage because the 'heave' was pretty monumental on one of them, yet child's play on the other.
Used the same tool and a carefully calibrated heave to torque up afterwards - 400 Nm or thereabouts? Seem to recall it worked out as near enough weight of son sat on the end of the 1.5m long lever.

The tool is a multipurpose one. It has holes in the other end at Mazda MX5 & Rover 800 wheel nut PCDs to hold hubs stationary whilst removing hub nuts with the more traditional impact driver - after one forgot to slacken the nut before putting the car on the stands - again.

It has had several previous lives as lever, brace, engine 'bridge' etc. It has its own special storage space in the corner of the shed.

Could take a photo if you really must, but it is embarrassingly crudely made.
