Tips to welding cast steel

7018 doesn't work good at all with gaps

I think the 7018 is a little harder to ignite than the normal rods I use, but else it welded good, ned an thick weld for the slag to release easy, if the weld is narrow it seems to stick a lot more.

But it welded the rotor good, but I guess I could have used my normal rods OK 46.00 with out any problems if I just heated it more before I started to weld like I did with the 7018's.

I'm using the 7018 also for welding on my homemade rotator now and seems to work great there also

Not because you can't weld a gap with but because is a low hydrogen electrode
The problem is that welding on a open gap you get hydrogen inclosure
Before to weld you do the root pass using the mig welder or e6010
Than fill using 7018

I see there is an jungle oit there with rods to choose from, I just searched the specs for Esab's rods and than I found the 48.15 that looked like an good rod for welding cast steel.
Will there be any problems with my weld since I used it from the start?

Isn't sure but the percentage of failure is higher than a good fitt up situation
May go without problems or it will break again
But surely better than weld it using 6013

I know that I have many lack of knowledge but I always knew that 7018 is not good for open root first pass on anything
In the video is possible to see a big open gap between the parts
Because of that I wrote what you read
Anyway if I've written something completely wrong I apologize for my mistake

Plenty WPS around the world specify open root 7018. Just because it's more difficult than 6010 doesn't mean it can't be done.
In fact, was only a few months ago someone started a thread about WPS specifying open root 6013... which in 6G position is VERY tricky, something I wouldn't even think about trying! Yet people have achieved it and qualified it.

Bottom line - if it's ever been qualified by a proper WPS, then it's possible... just maybe not ideal or easy.

The "hydrogen inclosure" on the open root face is just plain rubbish. Even if it was a major factor (which it isn't) then the difference between cell and low hy is NOT going to entrain more hydrogen with low hy... how can it? Where does this imaginary hydrogen come from? The gases from the shielding flux block out water vapour from the air, just like they block out the oxygen content etc.

The only real difference in hydrogen levels will be the natural ones with cell vs low hy - that being the cell weld will have much higher levels... because this is what Cellulose electrodes do... The subsequent hot pass(es) "burns" the hydrogen back out (well, heats and diffuses it anyway), this is the whole reason why critical stuff doesn't fall apart when welded with cellulose rods.
And again, why you need to write a WPS and qualify it, which will specify root pass, hot passes if any needed, consumables to use, etc, so the finish welded joint is acceptable and passes both NDT and destructive tests.

Anyway, don't take my word for it, go and do your own research, because relying on 2nd or 3rd hand knowlege is a dangerous game, and leads to things like what you posted there about "hydrogen inclosure".

the 6010 will have in excess of 30ml / Hdm whilst the 7018 will remain low.....rooting with it wont increase the Hydrogen any more than any other weld.

7016s are ideal

We once did a study using 7016 and 7018 and the results were similar.....the measurement being Nitrogen content rather than Hydrogen.......the Nitorgen decreased with the welders experience...ie a good experience guy would do a better job than a novice

@Munkul @TechnicAl thank you a lot to make me know my mistake ,I was reading about on the welding web but maybe I miss understood (100% sure that I miss understood) but there were also the English Italian translation that we know that isn't quite good and I took for good the translation
Can be slag and not hydrogen?
Because in same topic they were talking about slag and hydrogen so I'm pretty sure I confused the terminology during automatic translation

My only worry is not appear as someone who talks without knowing
It's an handicap to me be Italian because my English knowledge make me always worry about writing something wrong and when I write something wrong I feel stupid

If there is any consolation in it I have no idea what you are talking about

I just make sparks and melt metal together the 7018 was the first I found that crack-resistant weld metal in it's description.
And that sounded like it would work good with my project.
Guess I will find out soon enough if it holds ore not

A good rod for this type of work are BOC`s dissimilars, they are my go to for cast steel and forgings.

Couldn't find anything like those here in Norway when I did an search in the web shops.
But it's welded and hopefully I don't need to weld it anymore in the future

The only thing is if I'm welding some connection points to the homemade roatator when I'm making the tilt on it, I guess it's housing also is cast steel.

Just ask for 312 stainless...a good shop will know what you mean....the advantage is that you could possibly reduce the preheat

I guess that this is possible because stainless steel generally have less heat conductivity so stainless steel rods burn hotter than normal carbon steel rods...
Is that possible or is only a stupid legend?

No its because the mode of cracking will probably include Hydrogen....Austenitic stainless will absorb hydrogen so none will transfer to the alloy steel.
