Got this. Didn't come with a standard, but it zeroed nicely on my mitutoyo standard, feels nice enough. Not as nice as a mitutoyo/M&W mic, I kinda wonder if it's a fake, but Starrett stuff IMO has always seemed a bit rougher than the other precision toolmakers... anyway it was cheap, lol

Never been a fan of Starrett mic's, as you say they just don't feel as good as Mitutoyo etc. They do work well enough, just the feel.

Glad it's not just this one. The zero is repeatable enough, but its not as positive a feel as the mittys, M&W or the KS.

Meanwhile a lot of new stuff arrived while on vacation.
Next holiday I need a place without internet connection;-)
Most interesting things are a broken Kemppi Fitweld 300 and some 316 grade FCW wire.

Desoutter mini die grinder. Same size tools as the dremel which is handy. It’s fast. Don’t know the rpm but it’s fast

Mitutoyo a d old m&w are better mikes than starret hence the much lower prices for starrett usually.

I got my 1-6" starret set for £90. But not carbide anvils which makes a difference to the feel.

Just sold my odd mitutoyos and m&w because I didn't have a complete matching set.

When a good boxed Mitutoyo set comes up cheap I'll buy it and move the staretts on.

My tig is a Selco 202 ac/dc. I am in the process of making a cooler for it, but don't use it much so no rush. I am really nervous of it dying though - might it be repairable?

Apparently it’s a friction tester, it looks professionally made but there’s no makers mark of any sort on it.
as far as I can tell to put a 1/2” ratchet onto the socket and press the little hardened steel cylinder into the spinning shaft and read off the amp gauge on the front?

Yes arrived well packaged, the recyling bin now full.
Tried it and it it has a lot more grinding power, maybe 10x. Tried it on the power meter, they are about the same. Idle 129w and with decent pressure 250w. The difference is the silverline is almost all motor heat, and stalled at 250w while this is still running at the proper speed.
