Sort of. In a manual set up with gears, there is no need to know where the table is. All a particular gear train does is to provide a fixed ratio such that one turn of the leadscrew produces a known angular movement of the DH. So in that sense, it is not necessary to know a start point or reference (q.v. keeping the halfnuts engaged during the entire screwcutting process).
Maybe do not think of the stepper turning at a particular speed, rather that one 'tick' of the encoder produces a set number of 'ticks' from the stepper. The general principle is known as 'encoder following'.
With traditional helical gear cutting, you start with the cutter outside the blank and traverse it across at the correct depth of cut until it clears the other side. The blank will rotate at the rate set by the gears. It will stop rotating when you stop turning the handle.
You then bring the cutter back through the space just created. The blank will rotate in the opposite direction. The position where you bring it back to in relation to your starting point does not matter as the gearing is always engaged.
You then index to the next tooth using the plate and sector arm. This is 'downstream' of the gearing so the leadscrew/blank relationship is still preserved, just shifted to the next tooth.
And repeat the process until you make that last half tooth at the end.

A little clamp:
Neil Paskin made these for a youtube video and then did a "guess the weight" competition on patreon to win one of five clamps. My guess was only 5 grams out so I won one of the five. It arrived today; I've no idea what I'll use it for (if anything) as it's very small (5 mm square grid paper for scale) but one can never have too many clamps!

Can you educate me then Mr Bob, the skip chain is the style the saw came with but the research ive done by the tell no lies internet says skip chains are for 24inch and over, this is 16inch, the new bar and chain has been used and cuts lovely,Top chain is a skip and the new ones standard.
