I am faced with the task of making a gibstrip for the new long cross support for the ML7.

This is a real challenge for me and requires some effort, so I better use exactly the right material from the start.

I have asked around here but also elsewhere, I have researched and even consulted books

Of course, cast iron is widely used, especially gray cast iron and particularly that in which the graphite is in spherical instead of lamellar form. I ordered that as an alternative and a backup, I showed it here.

Brass was also mentioned, but this did not come off well at all in reference books for this purpose.

There is one material that is exceptionally well suited for the pupose, but I have difficulty finding the English equivalent for it:

Whenever I look up "Rotguss" (like "RedCast") I get the translation "gunmetal" which is not entirely applicable, one reads also red brass, multi-material- or machine bronze.

When translated to English it should be something more like "leaded red brass", in French "bronze d'étain au zinc", in Italian "ottone rosso".


What is meant in any case is CuSn7Zn4Pb7 C, (C here for Cast not Carbon) in this application specifically RG7 for German "RotGuss7" according to the CC493K standard.

This is characterized not only by its excellent sliding properties under normal conditions, but also by its superior emergency running properties when lubrication fails.

Please make us all a little smarter:

You on the island/s may have invented that stuff long before us, what's the name of this fabulous alloy in your parlance???

That's because brass is a terrible material to make a gib strip from. Iron, steel, bronze but not brass. I know that there are several flavours of it and some would actually be suitable but none are the type that would typically be used, people will always go for the horrible gummy smeary type that's easy to get hold of in strips down the DIY store.

Absolutely spot on, I think I have identified the seller too as there was a UK return address on the package. If this was an attempt at a so called "brushing" scam are we suddenly going to be inundated with car jack ratchet adverts?

Looks a bit like a solution to a problem that doesn't exist to me.
