Today I acquired...a lucky wheel bolt..the lucky one is the one still in the wheel!

I've never experienced anything like this before...there was quite a bit of vibration and clunking.

Thanks to a passerby Mack who stopped to help me out...nice to know there's still good people in the world. He went home and fetched his tools to get the wheel off as the lucky bolt wasn't going anywhere.

Possibly my terminology but it’s the part of the pump that pushes the water out of the hose that’s not working properly and making a loud noise whilst it’s doing it.

I’ve not taken it apart but i assumed there was an impeller type arrangement in there to push the water out?

A boat would be a nicer place to live im sure!

Facebook marketplace stuck again!

I seems like 90% of bandsaws that pop up are wood cutting ones that are too fast for doing any real work with metal so I jumped at this tool room saw.

It needs some love and a few blades but I’m glad to have it. Interestingly I never considered the speed control would be a variomatic style system.

In our case it is the pressure of the cold water pipe that distributes the water to all households via the network: 5 bar, 5°C is our rule of thumb.

What else could make noises would be a defective boiler/hot water generator, but there's nothing mechanical in it per se...?

Of course, it could be completely different on your islands than on the UK mainland, I don't know.

I’m not a plumber but there’s a few ways water is heated here. This shower is an electric one that ‘instantly’ heats the water passing through it on demand.

In a nutshell, water comes in cold at mains pressure, goes into a vessel about the size of a redbull can where it’s heated and is then pushed out the shower head by a pump which I assume is where the impeller is. I’m going to cut it up tomorrow to see.

Other systems have hot and cold inlets and do all sorts of mixing inside to get the temperature. All work on mains pressure as far as I know. I’m not a plumber but that’s my very basic understanding of the handful of systems I’ve come across in the houses I’ve lived in.

What you describe I know as an Instant Hot Water Heater (Durchlauferhitzer like run-thru-heater) - no pump, mains pressure.

Then we have different types of boilers that store some supply of hot water, heated in the different ways or mixtures of them (e.g. solar thermal and wood burner work into the same supply - again no pump, mains pressure.

What both systems have in common is that the user ends up regulating the temperature with a mixer tap by mixing cold water with the hot water at the ONE point of use.

It's true, neither in the UK nor in the US have I seen this often or at all, always two single taps - how you do this without alternately scalding yourself and getting frostbite will always be a mystery to me.

There is supposed to be a device in this thing so that when cold pressure drops - toilet is flushed for example - the user doesn’t get burned.

They don’t work properly.

Definitely a close shave on the wheel...I can't work out if 4 out of 5 bolts fell out or were "removed".

The alloy wheel didn't survive...I'm 100 miles from home so local garage will be checking for other damage in the morning.

One (small) advantage of the two tap system is that it tends to encourage the homeowner to adjust the hot water temperature on their boiler. I have a mixer tap (with two separate valves rather than a turn and lift type thing) in the kitchen, but for most uses it's not needed. If I want cold water I turn the cold tap on. If I want water at a temperature that's comfortable to shave with, I turn the hot tap on. If I want boiling water, I use the kettle! When I'm on holiday abroad and they have the turn-and-lift taps, I have to adjust the hot temperature every time I use it, which seems a lot more hassle to me.

Now obviously, there's nothing stopping someone with mixer taps throughout from setting a sensible temperature on their boiler, but it doesn't seem to happen very often!

For the combi pressure drop issue...would a pressure reducer help if it's fitted after the feed comes off for the boiler (combi has its own pressure valve I think?).

My thinking is this might help limit the pressure drop to the combi...by limiting the pressure feed direct to the cold tap.

Almost certainly not torqued or even tightened the last time the wheel was re-fitted, look for signs of fretting on the hub, wheel mount face and around the taper on the bolt holes, if they fell out it would probably have been a slow process,

Well personally I put the plug in the sink, run some cold in then add hot to the temperature that suits. People have been doing it for years it only seems to be the more hard of thinking who have trouble with it.
