Question for the forum:

I have been offered taps in inch sizes where only the diameter value is given, but no indication of the pitch.

Is there a standard correlation between diameter and pitch in inches if any additional information is missing or do I at least have to know the system (BSW, UNC, UNF, etc.)?

These are the sizes: 1-3/8", 1-1/2", 1", 7/8", 7/8" Pipe, 3/4" - the pictures look like pretty fine thread to me, may be the size is deceiving though ...

After seeing them recommended on here I bought a pair of the Piergiacomi flush cutters on Amazon.

I went for a larger set as they can cut 2.5mm & were on offer. Unfortunately the 2 cutting edges don't meet properly with one edge sliding over the other when squeezed hard.

So they are heading back to Amazon for replacement.

How do they get away with selling what must a lot of the time be fakes, touted at full price? Brother just bought some plastic faced pliers for forming 0.7mm copper. Broke first try. Look at the light/dark colours at the break. From Amazon again.

UNC, UNF, 4-42V don't have that. So that's a clue.

I asked the supplier: Some of the taps have marks like S, R, SS - does that mean anything?

Time to start using those gauges on the unmarked ones then and see if the thread counts match a BSP chart.

When I have bought them I will surely do that, but I wanted to know what it is first .... the guy does want money for them, you know

That could be a problem, for me it's not much more than a "nice to have", the guy thinks he has quite the good stuff - I didn't wanted to open his eyes unneccessary

I've the exact same for 6yrs plus, I call it metalworker, used for wood a few times but mostly metal, very hard to stall, versatile bit of kit with the right belts and pads

Good to know. I bought some medium & fine belts, and some mixed grit packs of discs too.

As I understand it the EU has adopted BSP thread sizes for pipe threads so they directly equate to your 'G' threads, (though the 'G' on your taps probably actually relates to GAS as they probably pre-date the EU adoption).

I'm working from old knowledge of older British Standards, so I may be a little out of date.

"G" was under BS2779 - parallel female thread - so the tap marked with a "G" would create a female parallel thread.

What confuses me is your SKF tap with the "R" designation - the "R" indicates a male taper thread to BS21 - which obviously the tap isn't going to create . . .

Rc - female taper thread under BS21. Rp - parallel female. Rs parallel male. RL also parallel male (long)

BS2779 is for joints where the seal is not made on the thread, BS21 is the same as one of the ISO standards for seals on the thread.

I have to admit for a decade I simply slapped "Tap **BSP" or thread "** BSP" on drawings, and never had a problem - things came in, or were made, things screwed in, on or together, and simply worked, even up to silly pressues.

Moved companies were internal standards required the use of "Rc", "G" etc and I constantly had calls from suppliers asking what I meant . . . so I now add "(BSP)" and the calls stopped

Having a chat with me neighbour over the fence today like you do.., he's quite new, only been there 5 years anyway, good bloke ex facility maintenance and been doing a load of work on his patch.
Anyway, starts going on about our rear borders which back onto a fairly large pathway with a downsloping embankment behind our fences.

Long one short, says our fences are 10ft back from where they should be because of the incline down to the pathway - we own that 10ft beyond the back fence he says!
Checked the land registry transfer deeds and he's bloody right! so today I acquired 300sq feet

Made the mistake of telling the Mrs, seems to be calculating some back breaking plans....should have kept me gob shut, its a bloody jungle on the other side
