Talking of which I was given a balloon backed chair to restore as part of my fine furniture making and restoration training , it had been fished out from a skip. They were designed for pulling nails from wooden packing cases. I have a set that is probably 50 years old and works a treat, but I wouldn’t use it on a Chippendale chair !
The rh front leg had been nailed to the seat squab with a four inch rusty straightened nail , the spells were broken or missing plus several other nasty chunks of damage as well as well as a rusted in number 8 slotted screw through the LHR leg in to the back of the spell hole.
After a morning of intense activity I eventually got the nail out by the drops of water & a 32 ounce soldering iron method , using a pair of pincers gripped in two V shaped bits of oak held in the wood work bench vice .
