Just bust my monthly tool allowance with one purchase.
I renovated my Tom Senior M1 mill a few years ago, I haven't used it much, mainly because I never got the thing commissioned completely, but I have used it for a couple of light jobs.
I needed to machine a better sleeve for the original motor as the previous owner had mounted a 90 frame 2800 rpm motor with 24mm shaft but also gave me the old motor. I dug into the star point of the original 1hp 1400rpm Brook motor so I could use a VFD. I had to make a sleeve for the shaft. my first attempt was a bit carp.
So, I was going to make a new sleeve, but after testing the motor and VFD, there's not enough grunt to turn the motor speed down, it just stalls. I took off all the belts and the machine seems free enough and I did replace most of the bearings when I renovated it, so decided to upgrade both motor and VFD. The old motors are not very good at low speeds and VFDs
So gone for a 90 frame 2hp IE3 4 pole 1430rpm motor and WEG cold plate inverter. I like these inverters as there's no fan to drag in carp and generally annoy me, nice and quiet. The other VFD's fan goes most of the time, even when the mill isn't in use. So with 2hp at 1430 rpm, there should still be plenty of grunt for lower speeds. The mill can cope with 2hp, almost the same body is used on the Major model which has a 2hp motor.
The old motor and VFD will fit on the Meddings scroll saw that is in my to-do pile, so saves me buying one for that.

Jeep GC take 2
After sending my previous GC back to the dealer and getting a refund cos it needed the oil cooler seals doing and we couldn't agree on who got it repaired I've now bought another one
Its an 09 Overland, pretty good condition but does have a few issues
1. Turbo actuator is sticking, probably the turbo vanes
2. Oil cooler seals need doing
Yes I know the other one got returned to the dealer cos it needed oil cooler seals, but, this one was dirt cheap, cheap enough that I could pay a garage to do the seals and fit a new turbo and still have a wedge left compared to what the other one cost.
This is the facelift model so has black interior which probably suits my use better than the light grey interior of the other one

Even if I'm not posting anything in the related thread, I'm keep going on the axe project,the shape is there ,I'm currently working on thinning the blade to reduce weight.
I've started from 2.4kg I've reached 1.6 , I can remove more material, I can probably reach 1.4 or 1.3 kg ,the target was between 1 and 1.25kg , that would be great but I'm skeptical about this goal ,I don't believe I can reach this target
It's true I have to remove about 5mm in thickness from a side
the axe eye wasn't correctly aligned to the edge , and I've rather remove material from the blade instead of trying to make the eye straight , which has to be blended so few grams will be removed from the too not so much but still something.
I've was reading the instructions on the cold blue.
It says to mix it 1 part of acid in 2 parts of water then submerge the work piece in the solution for 3 minutes.
Rinse with water dry the parts and apply oil .
Have someone advice to give?

Depressing isn't it, pretty much true of all solid fuels.
Can't help feeling many of these suppliers have taken note of how the gas, oil and electric companies have stiffed the consumer and thought to themselves; well, why can't we have a bit of the same?

Is Anthracite any good ? We used to get it over here for our coal Aga, it was a tad expensive, but gave out loads of heat.

I don’t know Mat, I’m very much an amateur, but I know the stuff I’m getting from my steel merchant is not good, poor heat, very dirty. I know of one blacksmith in the UK that has a supply from the Forest of Dean which is interesting, but despite @nickk ’s kind offer getting it from the UK to here will be too expensive, I need to find a decent French supplier.
