Today I acquired...........

Finally after months of waiting I have acquired an office door / window. Can finally get the builders to make a start on plasterboarding and skimming.

Guy's doing the install were told they were installing a door and everything they needed was in the van. Hadn't been told they were installing it in a steel frame.

Luckily I was on hand and had to drill out the steel with some DeWalt extreme 2 drill bits (those are lovely bits) and generally help them out with big step ladders and other stuff that hadn't been brought.

Earlier in the week I couldn't contain my excitement when I discovered that there's a proper size chart for elastic bands... and today some, in a specific size, arrived from eBay.

Not only did they arrive but my excitement was compounded when I opened the envelope to find that they were VACUUM PACKED!

If by gap you mean the 8" universal column at 30kg/m then I guess yes there's big gap there

It'll be covered up somehow. If you're level with the roof it's not actually that exposed but because it's set back a bit it's obvious from below.

My dad used to design and build vacuum packers - an early memory (bear with me - it links rubber bands and vacuum packets) is aged something like 5 or 6, playing with rubber bands under a desk of someone in Tidworth army supply base, while my dad serviced one of his machines . . . somehow I can't see that being allowed nowadays

It was bigger initially. We cocked up slightly when measuring / drawing up the steelwork, a neighbour does steel shed fabrication / erection but we drew up the beams on my computer to get the angles right. Drew datums on the floor, took careful measurements and then drew them in Inventor to let it work out the angles to send to the steel suppliers.

Only we forgot to account for the fact we were dropping the whole thing down 9" below the floor...

I was busy the day they lifted the bits into place but when I came back I thought hang-on we were meant to be sitting tight to the roof line (difficult because it wasn't straight). Then at 3am thinking about it I realised what had happened. Luckily with a bit of ingenuity on my side we chucked some acrows under the edges to stabilise it, an 8x2 in the middle and two 4x2s down the edges bracing the verticals. Another acrow and bottle jack under it in the middle and we could jack it up so the bottom bolt holes of the pointy bit could line up with the top holes of the uprights. The neighbour then welded up some gussets which got bolted on top of the uprights to pick up the other bolt holes even though they weren't really necessary.

My day is now even more complete now you've shared that childhood memory; serendipity at her finest!

(I'm actually being utterly serious; as we get older and parents pass away, one most recently in my case, all that remains are happy memories.)
