The other month, at the Men In Shed, we were donated a nice little vice.

The person who donated it was pleased that; "Dad tools are going to be reused."

Looks nice, well in this case looks are deceiving.
It did not move. The handle was glued in place as well. Underside was a mess off rust.

So, what to do. We are short of a small metal vice, so I thought I could at least have a go.

Step 1
De rust.

Step 2
Leave over night, drink beer and recycle beer cans.

Step 4.
Clean and look at the mess.

Step 5
Wire brush clean, followed by a nylon brush and my mix of wax and linseed oil.
Look smug, drink coffee.

Reassemble and feel smug.

The pipe vice is now removed and the vice fitted.



The old 19mm chip board was well past it's best.

So a rummage in one of my woo piles and some 20mm tongue and grove floor boards we have a nice place to stand.



A quick fettle with a router to but a nice bead on the wood, helps to stop slipping. We have a nice Danish oil finished to place to stand on.

The No1 record vice will not be going to the Combined cadet Force.
I took down them last night to be told.
" We don't want second hand rubbish, we expected new equipment. If you want leave it, we will E bay it"

When I said, I will not be doing that, the CO got upset and demanded that I leave it.
It was not left, I reminded him his rant was a cadet rank, as mine rank was real.
Sorry it was petty, but I was not annoyed.

It will be rehomed at a cause what will appreciate it.

The vice has been rehomed.
To a local sailing club, they needed a vice to help them do small repairs on the Mirror dinghies they have.

A very great full organisation, glad the Record No1 has found a good home.

Went for a mooch around our local car boot/Sunday market at Ayr racecourse this morning on my way home after taking the folks to Glasgow airport. Its usually not worth going, but the good weather has the folk out today flogging their junk.

Got the haul below for a total of £15

2 Tecalmit oil guns; Jacobs No.3 chuck; 3/4" MT2 drill (new); 2 carabinas and U shackles; and 3 small adjustable wrenches.

I acquired another lump of scrap for the pile. I had to pull the injectors on the other half's Mondeo but had no access to my tools so had to buy rather than make an aligning tool for refitting.

Sloppy fit, made of cheese and not up to the job. Worked round the issue but still narked at paying for some total tat.

It sets the calipers to zero for initial setup. For example if you replace the battery you would fully close the jaws and press and hold the Origin button for a few seconds and the screen will read zero.

When you change the battery it doesn't know where the zero or origin on the scale is. You close the jaws fully & press the origin button to get everything zeroed in, for some reason the zero button will not do this.

The zero/ABS button will zero the readout at whatever position you are presently at but the "true" zero will be retained in memory. One example of how handy it can be is you can measure the inside dia of a bolt hole and zero the scale, you can then measure between two (identical sized) bolt holes and the value on the screen will be the centre distance.

Yes I use it all the time.
One thing a lot of people do not realise is to put it back into Absolute mode you just press and hold the Zero/Abs button for 2 or 3 seconds and it will go back to Absolute mode. I have seen some people turning it off/on to get it back the Abs mode which works fine on the models that are not Auto On/off
I have also seen people closing the jaws and pressing the Zero/Abs button again (for less than 2 seconds) but all that does is keep it in Incremental mode but zero at the closed position which in itself shouldn't be a problem unless there is a bit of muck in the jaws, so much better to do it the way it is meant to be done

The quality of the mitutoyo and Moore & Wright compared to the cheap Chinese stuff I've been using up to this is unbelievable. there's literally no comparison, its like going from a fiat punto to a rolls Royce.

The small one: Unscrew the end cap push the nozzle back into the body then with your new tin of grease with the steel plate in, invert the gun over the hole and push down. As the grease goes in the piston forces the nozzle out until it's full. The one with the knob, from what I can remember, pull the knob out (matron) and twist a quarter of a turn to lock it out against the spring, the fill in the same way as the small one. Refit the end and twist the knob to release.
