Hmm dont know about golf balls as handles.I have arthritis in my hands, and have adapted golf ball's as handles for a variety of tools. The one on the chuck key is especially helpful in tightening & loosening bits.
I just drill them undersize, and about 3/4 of the way through, then pound them on. The rubber core provides a strong grip. Just be careful and wear safety glasses while drilling, as occasionally you might come across a very old ball which has a liquid core that can squirt out the contents. I did notice poundland currently selling wood rolling pins that would be ideal for file handles with 2 or 3 per length/£1. I bought several.
I'm not being cheap, have quite a few new file handles that cant be used as the pilot drill size they used was excessive for the size and would have to be glued on.
Usually I heat a file tang red and push it on. The swelling of wood locks it very well in place.
