Nice 3" vice !
The jaws look to be for a specialized purpose. It would seem easy enough to mill the protrusions down, and just clean up the top of the jaws ?

Bigger than it looks 4.5"!
That was my initial thought but the sides on one jaw come up a bit short of the casting and I use that as a reference quite often.

I go through spits and spats of finding a bargain, nothing for a long while and then.

Two or three weeks ago I picked up some cans of decent spray paint and other bits and bobs from a Wickes cancer contribution sale, stuff they had donated, 50p a shot, my arms were full.

Today I had a grandson/daughter with me and it was time for me to go to the dump and get rid of mostly timber, our nearer dump won't take timber.

This GS, 7, loves going to the dump and has done so many times with me, if he is lucky, he gets to see tip containers being collected for recycling or empty ones being put back, he is fascinated, likes the big size of it all, my GD couldn't be least interested.

On the way out GD piped up and asked If I knew they had a shop on the site, yes I said they salvage good stuff from the bins and resell it but I have never thought myself of paying a visit.

They wanted to go, damn it, so turned the car around and back in we went.

GS nearly had a fit, packed to the gunnels with fishing rods/tackle and toys, clothes, TVs/PCs/furniture, everything you can think of really, I've never seen so many lap top bags and golf clubs, clearly all of it salvaged.

My acquisition, tucked in a corner clearly not often looked at by the junk in it were 14 x 2m length drain rods, the thick type and a bag of fittings, I have a set but can never have enough.

Found a floor worker in a Hi Viz, how much I asked, " what are they "?, that stumped me for a moment, told him, £1.00 each he goes and the bag of fittings?, he took a quick look, looked at me and said £3.00

I left with a big smile on my face, those type of rods are not cheap to buy, neither are the fittings and the kids, they left in 7th heaven, arms full, I'm now waiting to get it in the neck from parents but it will have been worth it.

A Taylor-Hobson Model C Pantograph, complete with all the original equipment, manuals, and the Rotary Engraving and Precision Scale Marking attachments.

£50 courtesy of the Mechanical Workshop at the Physics Department who were having a clear-out to make room for new machines.

Unclear where I am going to put it, but that's a problem for future me.

Prices have dropped since I was into shooting.....

I fill up to 300 bar tanks and I will not fill them if they are out of test (no insurance if it goes wonky), will fill my own though which is a completely different matter.

They listed some bits on eBay, with the department's approval, on the agreement anything they made would go straight back into the workshop budget.

I think that Toluene is a traditional ingredient of petrol system cleaners. Needs handling with care though.

It's also an octane booster for high performance engines. I remember a time when I was top speed racing my bike these three guys bought turbo charger systems for their bikes from America and instead of forking out for proper race fuel they mixed their own concoction with toluene. At least 2 might have been all 3 engines melted their pistons on the first high power run. All for £130 worth of fuel.

used to also use Toluene in tape in printing of cross woven filament tape printing.

Fantastic nice! It's slightly grimy but specialist R&D workshops are the ideal balance of low workload and high operator skill to perfectly preserve machines.

I recommissioned and built a new ER11 spindle for one a few years ago for a friend who does lots of horology, and really enjoy using them.

A small CNC would make more sense, but there's something almost meditative about running a well set up pantograph.

Well today I acquired a battered parcel, it's taken a week to get here and most of that time looks like it was spent being used as a football. Inside the box is a controller board. I have made it quite clear to the supplier that they will be honouring the warranty no matter what!

9 full bags and a bog brush. I have donated the brush to a charity shop.
