It's quite a common method of adjustment on older verniers Mat.

The top right hand screw is tightened and then the thumb roller at the bottom is adjusted to give a sliding fit on whatever it is you're measuring. The top left screw then locks the jaw.

Not sure about the thing with holes in tbh. Just gave him a price for the box. There's a tiny flat DTI in the second picture not sure what it would be used for. Has about 15mm movement on the needle.

Pulled three of these large shelf units out of a 20 yard skip (which I was supposed to be filling with concrete rubble anyway so they shouldn't even have been there). I had to use a hammer and chisel to cut off the steel rivets to get them all in my van.

These are going to come in very handy for me to use up a large dead space behind my lathe.

Well now they are all fitted and stacked. They have freed up an impressive amount of space in my workshop plus provided an easily-accessible home for my T&C grinder and 10 ton press. I also picked up a super-long hoover hose which means I can leave my hoover in one spot and the hose can reach any spot in the workshop. I re-purposed and old coat rack to hang the hose on.

Just got to re-build my lathe chuck and collet rack now and fit a backsplash.

Just aquired a nice 13x8 shed. I was going to pitch it temporarily so I could empty one of the others to put a concrete floor in, but it's so nice, I have to do it properly... I do like a nice free shed..

A large "Surepower Drilling Machine" - No idea, but it will be better than the tiny BnQ I have! Date seems to be 1978, acquired for a very reasonable price.
Interested if anyone knows anything about them.

Yesterday's car boot finds. I am collecting far too many files. There are so many good quality old English ones about that no-one wants. The top file is a coarse double cut. I bought it because the manufacturer was fairly local. "Cook & Nicholson, Sunderland." The seller only wanted 50p and due to the low price expectation of the stall holder I bought the 300mm adjustable spanner for the same amount too which I don't really need. The adjustable needs freeing up and derusting. It will give me something to do.

The second from top item is a bit of a car boot novelty. A non rusty file. It is by Stubbs, England. Single cut. Pretty much unused with a nice handle. Cost one pound. It looks very modern. I always assume that English toolmakers are always defunct but this one looks very recent.

I bought five sanding blocks for a pound from a dealers stall.

A very clean Starrett A2 holesaw arbour. Two pounds, this is a 90% discount from the current retail price.

The tap wrench is a Vermont No 6, Made in USA, 50p, this needs freeing up too. I tend to buy anything that says made in USA as you assume they wouldn't export rubbish. I have looked it up on Ebay but the brand doesn't seem to command strong prices.

Dinky Engineer's square 50p, no name on it. Those sanding blocks may come in handy to clean this up.

The bottom file is coarse cut and very chunky. It is 15mm square at the tang end. I didn't have one this shape or size and the teeth look very good. The maker is Vickers which is a familiar name. I didn't know that they made files. I thought it was just armaments and the like.

I am yet to find a file card at the car boot sales.

More top stuff, how can you say no at those prices, I'm always picking up files, you can never have enough. Excuse my ignorance but is a file card not a wire brush? Never understood that one......

I just use a brass bristle brush on mine. Does the job.
