There was a great army surplus store in Clacton-on-Sea, where we used to go for Summer holidays when I was a lad. One year I spent my holiday money on one of those entrenching tools and dug lots of big holes on the beach

Ideally suited to the task. Mine is missing it’s metal capped shaft, and someone has varnished it for some bizarre reason
