Ah! I see daylight now! Thank you. I've started a fresh thread, because I'm bound to have more bonehead questions as things move along..There should be a lever towards the back at the chuck end something like this, see pic, that will cam the back gear in and out of engagement.

Tupers, nice old lathe, looks like it has a lot with it, but whats the large cylinder thing on the floor
at the front. Is the crank handle underneath for tightening the belt?
