And you need immediately available cash, and transport, and an understanding other half.
And storage, and a willingness to accept that sometimes you miss out, and lose cash (when you buy scrap).
Most of all - you need to trawl the 'bay, and Gumtree, and freecycle and car boot sales,, and the postcard ads in shop windows at EVERY opportunity, and learn to recognise the bargains - and take a punt.

Something I wonder a lot.......
A lot of digging and I don't bother to tell you about all the missed opportunities. Like a couple of super nice Bridgeports that went for £300/£400 quid recently. Clearly, if I had bid them up, they would have gone for more, even so, they still went for peanuts. Being able to snag a bargain is similar to committing murder. You need means, motive, and opportunity. That translates roughly into having the spare cash and a van, having the desire for a particular thing and finally, finding someone who's selling...
Then you have to pounce.

My dad gave me his nearly new Thorite 14CFM with a 100 litre receiver, and it is a belt drive so very quite in comparison to teh Clarke, plus I have a 3 phase screw compressor with only 20 hours on it waiting for me to finish my inverter installation so the Clarke had to go. I've had it for about 15 years, only needed to swap the start capacitor in that time, its been good but I wished I had bought the bigger tank, at the time of purchase I had a tiny workshop so it was the right move. I knew the belt drive was coming when I dropped off the Chipmaster for Maker and told him he could have my old comp if it happened so dropped by on my way to work in rainy Basildon.
Maker's workshop is chocker now, but I bet he squeezes more in
Edit - I forgot I also have a small super silent "dentists" compressor so still 3 comps.
Ignition switch will do!!

thats the only downside to direct drive.
one day il move over to a belt drive comp...
yet it had to rain today, coz its my birthday...
but i said yesturday, i aint doing a darn thing today.
feet up on stool and tv recordings all day and night..

Most airlines tend to use 1/4" BSP fittings, the OD of the male fitting is around 11.5m for the minor thread diameter. So if the walls of the fitting are 2mm thick then the ID is going to be smaller than 8mm. It also depends on how far your going, the further you go the bigger the pipe needs to be but as your shed backs up to your garage I think you'll be fine with 8mm ID hose.

Well what do you intend to run off it? Most air tools such as impact wrenches need a 10mm hose, though if it's a long run go bigger still.
The use of smaller ID fittings does slow down the airflow but just because a fitting has an ID of say 5mm doesn't mean there's no point in having the rest of it large. There are figures somewhere which allow you to work it out - e.g that a 5mm ID may equal 4 meters of 10mm.

The compressor is made up from of various parts including a pump from an old lorry, various plumbing fittings, dodgy wiring and whatever else the guy had in his spare parts bin. (that's the way I bought it) There is no pressure switch fitted but it has an unloader valve which works perfectly. I'll get rid of the dodgy wiring, re purpose the motor, tidy up the plumbing & fit the engine. I'll use the existing pump until I find a proper compressor pump to fit, then flog the old pump to the vintage lorry folks.

Was at a clients site today and given permission to rummage through a mini skip, I found ( all brand new and boxed/packed), a Norton IB6 oil stone (worth £30), a dozen or so assorted a Bahco Files, a Rabone engineers square, various normal and auto centre punches, a 1m steel rule also Rabone, and various tin snips, side cutters and combination pliers
